Lincoln LS 2001 v8 engine, throwing codes P1289 and P1299. Codes were read at Autozone.

Symptoms are:
1) Hard cranking long start and smell fuel when engine is first started.

2) The temperature gauge reads hot after first started. If the switch is cycled off then on again the temperature will go full cold and stay that way even after the engine has warmed up.

3) Just recently the engine overheated and had to be towed.

4) Cooling system was flushed recently and a new thermostat was installed in 2006.

The shop has recommended changing the CHT sensor. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
:(

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck. If they installed one of the new style thermostats, some have a lock so that if it is over heated it stays in the open position. Does the heater warm up as normal?

well - the P1289 - Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor Circuit High Input - which would suggest there was something wrong with the sensor....

Yes. It tells the computer you are overheating, when in fact you may not be. I had one go on me when I first got the car. Cheap part, not so cheap labor.

where is it located. my temperature gauge will go from normal to high with warning back to normal while I'm still driving.

Are you sure that you have a total fill in your radiator? Low coolant might have the sender in air and it won't read right that way.

yes. I am thinking that it could be either the coolant temp sensor or cylinder head sensor. I need to know where they are located in the system.

thank
