I'm thinking of refinishing the rocker panels, from the door down, with some underbody, or bed liner. Would it look odd in black, and do they offer it in other colors

Yea, they sell stone chip guard stuff made for that in an aerosol that can be painted over.

Bare metal would be best...

Starting with bare metal is best but I would prime with an etching primer for adhesion.

Just dip the whole bottom of the car in "airplane remover" up to the point that you want the paint stripped...

That'll give you a nice even line of stripped paint! Lol.

If you are going to put bedliner on the bottom or your car. Go to your nearest auto body paint supplier and ask them for UPUL Raptor skin. I just blanked on the last part of the name of it. But anyways then ask them to tint it for you in the color of your car. The nice thing about that stuff is with a schutz gun and a little practice on some cardboard before you can get it fairly smooth and then you will hardly see it. Or you can do what others have said and get some chip gaurd and then paint it to match over that. But chip guard can run on you so be careful.
