I happened on a thread here that said it was a dirty transmission filter. I had it replaced and now 95% of the whine is gone. Thanks to all the contributors, especially joe.

Wow, this is another problem I'm having - a sad sounding moan and/or whine heard mostly at low speeds. Probably there at high speeds but covered by other noises. I have a new tranny filter and other reasons to drop the pan.... I must be getting good at this cause I had concluded the noise was probably coming from the tranny and not the engine.

Hi HeyJewel

Another LS owner posted a YouTube of their LS's whine, which sounded exactly like mine at cold start.

They claimed the problem was fixed by a new alternator.
However when mine was whining, while parked, if I moved the gear shift selector from park to Drive, for a second or two, then back to Park then to Reverse for a second , then back to Drive, then Reverse, I could hear the pitch change dramatcally with what the transmission was attempting to do. Which indicated for me it was a transmission problem, not alternator or even serpentine belt related.

Yeah - that sounds NOTHING like what I'm hearing. I did try to record it with my iphone. It can be heard on the recording but with difficulty. If I can figure how to do it I'll post the recording. It does seem to be related to speed and engine but does not appear to be directly related to RPMs if that makes sense. Car has some other tranny issues which will probably require me to change fluid and filter soon anyway.
