I looked at the avic-d3, good price and looks good. i've heard good things.

i'm looking for a receiver that is in-dash, not a pop out and has: gps, sirius, bluetooth and obviously plays dvds and all that good stuff. one of my friends is telling me to go with an alpine. do you guys have any suggestions on certain radios?

d3 is the best bang for the buck. I dont have 1 complaint about mine.

I agree..but wouldnt go as far to say NO complaints. :)

The pros FAR outweigh the few cons though.

Cons: No RDS (WTF?), the "MENU" button on the Ipod graphic doesnt work half the time (common issue discussed on avic411.com), you have to control video playback via the Ipod vs completely from the Avic which can be a pain when you normally keep your Ipod locked away in the glovebox. The BlueTooth interface works very well with crystal clear sound, but the callerId aspect is a bit shaky. Incoming numbers appear, but even if you have them loaded into the D3's contact list with name..the name doesnt appear.

Pros: Literally too many to name. Took me awhile to figure out all of the options of the XM Navtraffic features, but MAN..now that I have? It's NICE to be able to check out real time traffic conditions in most of the DC highway system (not much), and the Virginia side. Maryland still doesnt have their speed sensors setup yet, but the traffic data on the "info" page is still great to have.

Not owning any of these systems, a down of the AVIC-D3 is its single slot player requiring you to upload maps into its memory on a limited and continual basis or loose the ability to play anything else while in Nav mode.
Again I don't have one but from reading reviews, discussions, and specs that is something that pops out to me. Other systems either have 2 disc slots for playing discs at the same time as the Nav or harddrives that hold the Nav info.

Good point. Personally, I keep the map DVD in the drive 100% of the time. I have the Ipod connector and a video Ipod with movies and music videos and photos on it..so that's my video source.

But..if I needed to use the DVD drive slot for movies, the Avic will store your pre-planned route to the internal memory, allowing the navigation to work even with a movie DVD in the drive. There are some limitations (ie trying to use the "change to alternate route" feature..where you would need to re-insert the NAV DVD temporarily to update the route info..)

In practice, the single drive hasnt been an issue at all

just curious. if i were to get the avic-d3 what else would i need to order?

this is what im pretty sure i'm going to need to have

  • Avic-D3 Unit
  • Lincoln LS Navigation Bezel Double Din [the one on lskoncepts.com?] - does it need any modification?
  • CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter
  • SIR-PNR2 Sirius Satellite Radio Tuner
  • ADT-VA133: Double-DIN Installation Kit

  • CD-V150M AUX Mini-Jack to Mini-Jack Cable [To hook up to my mp3 player, will this work with any standard mp3 player?]
  • CD-R55 Remote Control

anything else needed for the install?

I have an eclipse avn 6600 which is nice. I love it. has a separate cd slot for the nav map, that I just leave in there.

This thread will help you..

And trust me..I too had a non-Ipod M3 player. The Avic forced me to go Ipod. The Ipod plus avic=full integration...with a touchscreen Ipod actually ON the D3 screen when you switch the D3 to Ipod mode. So you'll need the Ipod cable/adapter if you want to go that route.

You will also want a Pac-SWI steering wheel control interface module, assuming you still want to keep your steering wheel controls.

Dont know what the double din installation kit is, but I dont think you'll need it if you plan to use the Lincoln Bezel..which will require some minor to moderate modification involving cutting away some of the back part using a dremel tool.
