For any of you with a v8, I have a series of questions. The info on this catback is too unclear.

What could the sound be compared to?
Is it ricey sounding or strong sounding?
Performance gain comments?
Worth buying?(found a site with it for 600)

Any clear comments would be helpful

Also, whats bad about the cabin noise at highway speeds?

I do not enjoy the ambient sound level at hwy speeds. It isnt ricey but it does have a raspy note to it. As far as performance it was not that noticable if at all. I would not buy it again.

I have come to the conclusion that perfomance does not have LS in it. Fir what you would spend on a few HP you could go on a nice cruise or hook up a nice component to the home entertainment system. 10 here and there isn't going to match other cars we are wanting to school.

I would invest in creature comforts if anything including inside the car.

I attempted to record my catback but it did not come out well one bit. I have them if anyone is interested though. First one is with my recorder taped under my car (hehe i screached my tires in it too), the second one is with it taped on my license plate. These recording make it seem really ricey but the tone is actually a lot deeper. I think my problem is that the recorder is meant for voice so it has a voice compression on it which doesnt pick up the higher frequency sounds. Hope this helps.

Actually that still doesnt sound bad, I know what parts would be the frequency getting messed up so I got an idea what it would sound like. I like it. Whats your opinion on it, it sounds good to me. Any performance increase?

I didn't notice any difference in power. I would call my catback the "economy" version. I had the pipes bent and cut for me and i bought the mufflers off ebay. I did welding myself and all that good stuff. If i had done it all myself near then end probably would have cost $400. Sounds good. Most of the sound is lost from the skinny stock pipes that have many bends in them. The mufflers set the tone. And the resonators just quited everything down, but with them off you get the resonance frequency hummm at highway speeds. I think an xpipe would help with that. Honestly the hum doesn't bother me one bit. I would do it just for the sound to get people to race you.

El Es, its probably raspy sounding to you because its a v6, im sure theres a sound difference.
Already been on Two cruises
Have a 57" tv

It's exhaust time.

Would Magnaflow sound the same way adrian?

Mine is magnaflow, with the catback from magnaflow it might sound deeper and yield some more HP because of the bigger pipes that are mandrel bent. Mine are press bent. Should sound better then min.

Actually 2 guys I know here in Tampa have the magna flow and borla and neither have the throaty V8 sound. The sound changed to a thicker note but is raspy on WOT. The ambient noise levels are just as crappy inside the car.

I agree, mine has a hroaty deep v8 sound at idle and then it sounds raspy at WOT.

Would a flowmaster be better for that deep v8 sound than? Be nice to have a v8 stang sound, but probably not doable.

yes - the flowmasters I have do give the V8 a deep rumble at idle, and an aggressive sound when driving. It may be too loud for some.

What do you have, Super 40's? I do not mind the loudness too much. I had a eclipse w/ a magnaflow, HUGE exhaust (installed b4 I bought it) that was a freakin' screamer. Was not too ricey either, was rather deep and attractive unlike most fart cannons.

yes - super 40's, 2.5" piping, magnaflow x-pipe, quad magnaflow double-rolled tips.

the flowmasters will create a loud interior resonance at 45mph under light load.

not ricey at all - more pro-street :gr_devil:

Seems like you'd get the bulk of the benefit given by the Magnaflow exhaust if you just buy and install the X-pipe and leave the rest stock. The smaller pipes impact power very little IN THEORY because the exhaust is done expanding for the most part by the time it gets there.

Does anyone have a set of factory resonators and mufflers that they'd be willing to cut open for inspection? The resonators could just be inspected from either side to see what the guts look like without cutting... It would be nice to know what the baseline is. You could go as far as reusing the stock stuff with bigger pipes if the other parts have good internals. A shop could easily expand the entry and exit for a larger pipe... Thus avoiding the raspy-ness.

I'd much rather have the throaty sound characteristic of an Infinity. I wonder if their muffs are any good. hmmmm

OR what about replacing the resonators with pipe? How would that sound? Just a crapping resonance at highway speed?

I think what you're seeing is the sound is too loud for the recorder to pick up without clipping... if you can adjust the level that it records at, set it for the lowest volume possible. Basically you're overdriving the microphone, which is why it sounds so bad. You might also try putting it in the trunk, just tape it down do it does't go flying all over the place. It does sound pretty good though.

Oh yeah, I found the clips...

does it lose the raspy sound when you replace the resonator with piping? does it also get louder and more of a muscle sound. and how much does it cost? i know a place that can do it for cheap, only like 115 for the complete install of my friends magnaflow on his 98 gt.
