Coil packs? fine. Airbag light? whatever... but a trans error? Uh uhh.
Hear dhte beeeeep and looked down just in time to see the E go away. No jerk or gear shift, no noticeable change while driving. Im gonna go on a limb and assume this was just a fluke since it was going up a slight hill at about 30mph, and maybe couldn't decide which gear it wanted to be in.

At the very least, does anyone know if the "E" message will set a code in the ECM? There was no CEL or anything, just the beep, and the E, then it was gone. Or does it have to be stuck on to set a code?
Thanks

I think "E" is for "Get me to the dealer really quick or else..."

I think it stands for ERROR or so, something with tranny. Try doing a search, there are some topics about it. Maybe the oil level is low.

I did search, I know what it means. I need to know if it sets a code that can e read even if the "E" is not currently on.

If there were no other symptoms or issues, what you described sounds like the "mystery beep" that occurrs once in a while in the LS. The fact that the "E" (error) flashed is the giveaway. Quik may know more, but I believe the issue is due to a simple power fluctuation and has nothing to do with any real problems with your car. It seems to be more common on the 00-02 models, although my 03 and 06 cars did it once or twice.

The "E" is normally caused by one of the solenoids operating out of range. Those of us that have had REAL tranny failures don't get an "E"...we lost gears or worse.

Get it to the dealer, you will likely need a new solenoid pack.

Well I got an E, so by your logic that means im good to go huh? :p

If it shows up again I guess ill take it in.
Based on the responses ive read in past threads, the people who have had major transmission problems, the E stayed lit at least until the engine was restarted. Mine went away immediately.
Thanks for the input guys.

The dealer will not be able to tell you what's wrong. I called the nearest "trustworthy" dealership and asked them if I should bring mine in when it flashed. They of course said to bring it in, but told me that they couldn't hook it to a computer to diagnose it; so I didn't take it to them. I probably will sometime this summer.

My tranny acts shuddery going up hill, and doesn't like to shift out of 5th, which makes it want to stall when starting from a stop. The hill thing made me think it was fluid level, but, not wanting to shift makes me think solenoid.

On a side note, 97stscaddy will you tranny shift into D4 or does it stay in D5 when shifted into D4? Also, is it SST?

No, it shifts fine. It goes to whichever gear I put it in no problem. No, I dont have SST.

One thing that I have noticed though is between 30 an 60mph when the torque converter lock up is engaged the car seems to hum. It only does it when the trans is in 4th and 5th gear and the lockup is engaged. Its fairly quiet between 30 and 50, but above 50 it gets progressively louder until about 60 and it just goes away completely. I dont hear it at all when the radio is on unless the volume is down very low. I think its just engine lug since it runs below 2000 rpm in that range. It has more to do with engine speed though than vehicle speed.

I'll take mine out this afternoon and listen for the hum.

I noticed this transmission hum too. My V does the same thing. A lot of manual cars do this but this is first automatic transmission ive heard do this. I know exactly what you mean. Going up a hill mine shudders going from 5th to 4th also.

My 00 V8 Auto had a shudder between 5th & 4th also. I had the tranny flushed and it helped a bunch but the gear indicator still acts up. If you are tooling down the hwy and slide it over to 4th it takes about 10 - 15 seconds to downshift. It will do that same if you're in 5th, stopped-foot on brake, and slide it over to 4th. Other than that is shifts pretty good. You might want to try a flush.

Yeah the hum thing is weird, but its not something im worried about, not unless it gets worse. Glad im not the only one whos car does it though.

Never had any trouble with mine shifting up or down. It changes within about a second or two if I move the shifter to a different gear selection.
