Time has come to change the coils. Tips? Tricks? :)

Oh jeez, NOW I hear these plugs suck... :p

Well, I'll try them for a while and see how I feel. Haven't noticed any problems so far.

And yeah TooManyToys, I'm in UT. The back bolts are both in place, it's the lower middle bolt I tossed. I had more trouble from that one then the rears, cut my hand open pretty good. Sooooo.... Garbage. :D

With a U joint and extensions the middle bolts are pretty easy to get to.

So, how hard is it to replace the valve cover gaskets. Just changing the plugs and coils was a pain in the ass.

If you think that was a PITA, you should try working on an 89 Town Car. The LS has been child's play compared to some of the things I've seen.

Do that job, but halfway through (while coils are out), pull another ~14 bolts per valve cover.
Some of the ones on the driver's side are hard to reach, but as always, some swivels, extensions, flashlights and magnets make it short work. Get a set of deep 1/4" drive metric sockets.

The one point I would stress is to make sure you clean the area around the oil dipstick where it fits into the block before you pull the drivers side VC. There have been a few VC repairs on the net followed by engine failures and based on my discussions with mechanics and what i found, this may be an issue.

This was the result of cutting down the mounting stud to lessen any dipstick movement per the Jag forums, and this still occurred when moving the DS out of the way of the VC.

If the DS would have just been pushed back in, sand would have eventually made it into the oil pan and possibly through the oil pump. While there is an oil filter, they are usually bypassed by design on first start up or when the oil is very cold.

Thanks, I'll see about doing that soon as my new "Oil Fill Tube" comes in. I think thats the cause of this whole problem ><

Always replace the sparkplug at the same time as the coil. Half of these "coil failures" are caused by a leaking boot and an arc tracked sparkplug. Lots of times just changing the boot and plug will fix the misfire.

Just have a several 1/4 inch universals and several different length extension. I can get all bolts with some creative knuckle busting.

One more tip...replace all 8 coils at a time. Otherwise, you will be doing a coil every month for 7 more month, then a couple of years down the road, the same thing all over again. Just replace them all, along with the spark plugs.

Well... Since you folks have pointed out the problems with these Bosch +4's, I HAVE noticed a pretty big difference in acceleration. HOWEVER, it has also been near 100 degrees here for the last couple weeks... So not sure if it's plugs or temp. :p

Every summer it's 100 degrees plus here. You need good plugs period.

So, if I were to buy some of those NGK iridium ix plugs, does the model number matter? Could I use these?

I've noticed a few different plugs for sale...
A search at Autozone.com or even NGK's website will tell you which plugs you need. I'm running the Iridium IX plugs in my LS as well. The performance difference from the crap autolites I pulled out was ridiculous.
