So, I have had my fun getting to know this 96 Mark now it's time to do the basics and , being a newbie here and to the 4.6, I have a very basic question regarding spark plugs. I have seen that most here say the Autolite 764's are what to get. Is there a reason for the copper over, say, a platinum or other brand of plug ? I am just getting my order together and want to get what is best for the car...not what the manufacturers say is best !

Thanks

Copper to my knowledge has a better conduction for electricity than platinum and other metals they use. They will apparently ignite the fuel better resulting in better "performance". Stick with the 764 since my experience with platinum plugs led to bad idle and gas mileage... just personal experience. Why 764 specifically? They have a true copper core and are relatively about the same price as other plugs. Just a good spark plug for your money.

If you don't mind changing plugs every 15-20k go for the coppers. I noticed no mpg or performance difference between coppers and double plats.

If you want to just change them and not worry about it get plats or doubles. I honestly don't want to change them more than I have to due to the threads so I went with doubles the second time around. They should now last the life of the car.

Thanks, there are so many on the market now and they really push the 8 dollar ones. ..

Don't buy into those. There are some instances where they might be worth it, but 90% of the time coppers or plats are where it's at. Whatever you choose i'd suggest going with Motorcraft/Autolite plugs.

No Bosch.

Hmm I don't know about replacing them every 15-20k. I use 764 on my town car and all my marks. I replace them after 50-80k and never really needed to replace them but just did for maintenance. I used platinum on the town car once and the car didn't run as great. It's all just personal preference. I just prefer the 764 cause they are simple and work well.

And cheap, that's why most use them.

15-20k has always been the number people throw out there. I had 15k on mine and they looked fine, though some would've needed to be regapped.

autolite 764 here.
i ran mine about 30k. they looked fine. i would have put them back in but i already had new ones to install.

In both 4.6 motors that I've had experience with - the SOHC in my old Mustang, and our lovely DOHC - copper plugs have just felt good. The "butt dyno" approves, if you will. I personally prefer the NGK TR55, I've had great luck with them in my Mark thus far.
