i have a 94 lincoln mark VIII and the trans went out during an ice storm two winters ago, recently i decided to start looking into it, and why it went out, i took it to a trans shop right when it happened and he took the pan off and replaced a spring and said that it wasn't the problem, he said there was no metal shavings or anything in the pan when he took it off.

the problem is that when it gets up to 35 and od kicks in the trans feels like it goes into nuetral and i can rev it, but it also seems that it doesn't even go into third because i can get it up to 90 but nothing from there, and i know third gear goes to about 120 mph in my car.

unity thought it was the mlps, i replaced it and tried it, nothing, then i tried the alignment, it was right on again, tried it and same thing,

Does anybody have any ideas,

oh and i also checked the oil level and it was good
 
time for a new trans, one way clutch went. Look for a 98 mark viii trans or a 99-02 mustang gt trans.
 
yea and if you get the 01-02 trans, make sure you get the main wiring harness with it so you can slipe em together. Just keep your old TCC, VSS, MLPS - but use the bolts from the newer tranny to mount the shifter onto the MLPS. Use the newer TC cuz there the same.

You will need a speed cal also to be able to get the speedometer right if you go with high rear gears. If you keep it stock you can just swap in the Orange Cog.

If you have any questions I would be more than happy to help you out. It's not that hard, just make sure you get that wiring harness with the trans, it makes things sooo much easier.
 
Sounds like the direct clutch and/or overdrive band is fried to me. The intermediate one way will dump sprapnel in the pan most of the time and 2nd will be the troublesome gear.

well second is fine, no metal stuff in the pan, but there was no bad bands when the guy took the pan out, or so he told me
 
Has the 3-4 shift solenoid ever been changed? I had close to the same problem 3 years ago and Craig from the other site told me what he thought it was and I changed it out. Been fine ever since. Only two bolts holds it on and a wire harness all inside the pan. Mine was $57.00 and if you get one, take yours off first and make sure it matches up. Just because they say it's the right one, doesn't mean it is.

there isn't a 3-4 solenoid.

The 3-4 shift uses "both" shift solenoids, SS1 and SS2.
The only gear that doesnt use either soleniod is 2nd {dont ask how I know this) HAHA

For each of the 4 gears both shift solenoids are used.

I cant remember exactly
but it's something like
1st is SS1 on SS2 off
2nd is SS1 off SS2 off<again dont ask..haha)
3rd is SS1 off SS2 on
4th SS1 on SS2 on

DD can correct my mistakes if he likes.. but the JIST of what I posted is correct.

Looks about right to me. :)

You could try an updated mlps I have seen this problem exist from one. Usually direct clutch failure is the most common.

danny, dont rebuild the 94 box.

I got a very cheap 98 mark 8 trans and installed it.

If your so inclined to rebuild one, get a 98 Mark trans and rebuild it.
The part we're thinking that you smoked, is upgraded in the 98 trans.

When my 95 box died, I called up LQK and got a low mile 98 trans and dropped it in. the whole swap was less than 400.00 including 80ish dollars in fluid.
 
Ya. Hunt for a cheap 98. Its the best thing you could do. Also there are all over, remember they were not just used in the Mark.
 
Besides the one-way clutch what other upgrades were done to the 98 tranny?

compared to a 93-95 unit the 98 has a better case,valvebody,planet,direct frictions and is supposed to have a special output shaft.

ya that sounds better, but isn't there somethingabout teh starter motor on the aode that makes them not fit?

Do you mean the mark VIII tranny????

If so they will fit I have one in my 93. Just need to change the TCC solenoid and re-pin the harness connector, not bad at all.

The worst part was trying to line it up while on my back.:eek:

They do have a 3-4 solenoid because I changed it on mine. They have a 1-2 shift accumulator springs (blue & purple) and piston and the same for the 2-3 but there is a 3-4 solenoid and it controls the overdrive. I did not have overdrive when it was hot but after putting the new part in, I have had overdrive now for the last 3 years. Maybe they changed the name of the part that I changed within the last few years.

See the two silver boxes with the black spots in the center? That is the part that I changed in 2005, which at that time was called a shift solenoid. These pictures are from my transmission before I changed the part. Also, I had the price of mine wrong. It was $47.25 from an old parts store that had been around since I was a little kid. O'Reilly's sold me one that had a different bolt pattern but was cheaper. I took both home and I had to go with the more costly one. This is why I said to take yours with you.

nolimit94VIII - What your referring to in your pics is the shift solenoid, SS1 & SS2. The round solenoid to the right of shift solenoid is the TCC solenoid.

danny_holtermann - You can try a new shift solenoid, but if that doesn't fix it your stuck with the solenoid and a still dead trans. Once installed the part house will not take it back.

I agree with the consensus, get a 98 trans or the Mustang GT trans. They both have the updated internal parts and have been swapped/used my members here.
