Transmission Fluid

Here's what I did when I changed my own trans fluid. First, I disconnected the lower transmission line from the radiator. Then I put some 3/8" hose on the end of that line down into a drain pan. Then I turned on the car, and let it idle, this pumped out a lot of the trans fluid. Once it starts sputtering turn off the key, and button back up the trans cooler line to the radiator. Now just pull the pan and drain the little bit that is left in there, change the filter and your 1-2 accumulator if that hasn't been updated. Next, move on to the torque converter; pull the little rubber plug on the bottom side of the bell housing and find the small bolt inside the torque converter. Drain the T/C and put that all back together and then pour in your new fluid ~12 Qts.

Tip: When you buy a new filter, it may come with a cheap cork gasket. Throw that gasket out and retain the stock fat rubber gasket for the trans pan.

what is the differance between the cork and rubber gaskets? :Beer
 
Do the J-mod, install a tranny cooler, and replace the accumulator pistons while you're at it. Don't forget to buy the newer deep fluid pan, it's only $20...
 
Umm, the cork gasket is just really thin and flimsy and prone to splitting. The OEM ford gasket is a lot better quality and reusable.
 
How many miles on the vehicle and when was the last time the fluid in the trans was changed. I ask because based on those 2 answers, you may do more harm than good by changing the fluid at this point. Especially with this tranny.

Does the tranny fluid smell burned?

You could always drain it and look for contaminants but I would be careful to save the fluid (you can always strain it) because you may want to put it back in.

I should have been more specific. The car has 82000 miles. the previous owner had the trans rebuilt, or so the bill says, at 75000 miles. The problem I am having is wierd. When it's cold, or before it really warms up it seems like it wants to down shift a lot. the other day I got on the highway and was going about 65 steady, no hills, steady throttle. All of a sudden the tach shot to 4000 like it downshifted by itself. I don't think it's slipping because when it's hot it does not do it. Also each time you slow down, just before you come to a stop like at 10 mph you can feel it shift down. No automatic I ever drove did this. This happens all the time. It's annoying more than anything. The receipt is from some gas station and all it says is: REBUILT TRANS $1500.00.

ARE THESE TRANSMISSION A PROBLEM?

Should I just rip it out and put in a Jasper rebuilt?
