Its a 2001 v8. The other morning I hop on the freeway to go to work, around 40 mph it reaches a max and just revs topping off at 40. I immediately let off of gas, as its done this one before. Went to apply pressure to gas pedal and same thing tops off at 40, revs. I pull over and put it in park, put it in drive and the car will slowly crawl with it reving. Try to put it in reverse, same thing Rev with small movement. If I put it in park, then immediately shove it into the auto/standard crap it takes off with a rough kick in 2. When shifting to 3rd, it takes about a second and a half to actually shift. I'm pretty positive the easiest choice would to rebuild tranny/ replace entire tranny. Just want a 2nd opinion. I took it to a transmission shop who said that it's definitely nothing electrical and quoted 2500 for entire rebuild of tranny

Yes, your transmission could be toast, depending on how long you've let problems continue on it. Alternately, it could the the PCM (in that case, you will have the same problems with any other transmission you put in). Or, it could just be the solenoid assembly and/or valve body in the transmission. A somewhat more serious issue would be worn out servo bores, but even that is fixable (but does require removal and reinstallation of the transmission). If you drop the pan and there isn't a lot of metal in the bottom of the pan, it is probably better to just repair the problems and not do a full rebuild.

ZaddyG, do take a look in some of my recent tranny posts. I am convinced, and was warned (Joegr knows his stuff) that alot of tranny shops out there know nothing other than pull and replace. I luckily found a guy that knows his stuff here in Burbank, so if you are near I can share that. If your car was like mine - same year - and never had any tran service, I am almost certain at minimum you need a valve body rebuild (shift kit) since that was all that was really for certain wrong with mine. Springs that crumble to the touch after 15 years? Thats going to be pretty standard......

Do a google on oklahoma city transmission. Then take a look at reviews and the history of the shop. Finally check the BBB. While all these piece by piece will not necessarily shed which is the best shop, you should fined trustworthy. You need a second opinion, and like I found here, only dropping the pan will end up getting you the facts, unless its the PCM and that needs to be tested by a reliable electric tech. Again, if your car has never had tranny service dropping the pan will be a good first clue. A good tech will lead you to that first anyhow.
