I have a noise coming from my transmission that I can't diagnose. The noise is a moaning sound that sounds somewhat like a hydraulic pump noise. It never makes the noise when the car is cold, but if I drive for 30 minutes, stop, and then start driving again an hour later it almost always starts out making that noise. After I drive for another 5 minutes, it usually goes away. Anyone know what this could be and how to stop it? It is embarrassing. My car is a 2001 V6 LS.

i have the same issue and ive basically rebuilt tha tranny and the sh*t still sounds like its got a hernia no one can tell me what it is, if you find a solution please contact me thanks

How long as this been going on? Can you tell if it only does it in certain gears?

I have the same sound coming from somewhere down there but I just cant figure out what it is.

When the car is cold it wont do it but since it started and I couldn't figure it out its gotten worst. It usually does it as I just start to accelerate,... stays at a certain pitch/tone then goes away or if I'm on the stop and go it winds down as I stop and goes away then. Now that its getting worst I can hear it on the highway from time to time at any random moment regardless of the throttle position or rate of acceleration.

It used to only do it as I was driving but now I can pull over put it in park and flip the throtle plate and it does it a bit but stops before I could pin point it till I start driving again!

I had the torque converter replaced about a year ago, and it has been doing it ever since. My mechanic checked around and was told that it was due to the filter causing the pump to starve for fluid, and that a revised/updated filter was available. He put in the updated filter, but it still does the same thing as before, if not worse. We are stumped. It sounds like a sick cow moaning.

Oil level? Yes its been checked and I have had more than a few changes in this period of time myself.

I cant talk for the others.

Checked the oil level and it is correct. Very annoying. Can anyone offer a solution to this problem? Is it a sign of impending transmission trouble?

Anyone have a suggestion as to how to fix this noise problem or what is causing it. Nothing has changed over the last 8 months. Very annoying.

Yes I know

Mine is a 01 V6. Just got the news, tranny failure. $3400 replacement. Same problem and sound. Metal shavings. I trust this garage. After this, no more detroit cars.:(

I thought I read somewhere ( probably here ) that the lincoln LS's tranny oil ( Mercon III mixed synthetic) wasn't up to the task and that now when you get your tranny oil changed you should ask for the Mercon V ( full synthetic ) I don't know if that will fix the moaning sounds, but it's a shot.

Good Luck!

2004 owner’s manual calls for Mercon V ATF only.

Well, I hope it is not a sign of transmission failure. The car shifts perfectly. When the torque converter was replaced, the mechanic said the tranny looked OK and serviced the pump. Odd sound. I was hoping someone on here had been through a similar issue and knew what was causing it. I was also hoping it was not transmission failure.

fixed at great expense

OK, got the car back today with a new tranny. $3347. No more noise. Smooth as silk, quiet as a mouse. That noise I hated more. People would want a ride and say "hey what's that noise?" Now its great again. Warranty is 3 years or 75,000 miles. It should be life of car!!!!!!!!! Next time maybe a junk yard tranny with low miles.:D

If it sounds like a pump, chances are thats the problem. The pump is driven directly by the engine, whether the transmission is in gear or not.
