My car is a 05' 3.9 and has about 139k miles. Now I am not quite sure what transmission I have in it but either or, I will start with the symptoms:
- Harsh (almost slamming sound) when in reverse and putting into park.
- Pretty strong shifts
- 1-2nd gear kind of slipped last night (it was cold) Rpms just reved like in neutral but caught itself and shifted strong. It does NOT do this every time.
- And every shift is different. Different as in how strong the shift is or how smooth it is.

I have had my fluid changed when I bought the car at 107k miles. I just want double check on these symptoms and make sure it is the pressure pack I need to be buying and not a rebuild kit. And input helps!

Don't know what you mean by "pressure pack." It sounds like it is probably a bad solenoid assembly to me.
You have the 5R55S.

I thought the solenoid controlled the trans pressure or something. sorry about that.

But thank you for the help. ill look into buying one of those.

Beware that some members have had significant issues with the non-dealer ones. Appears some companies part old trannies, blow some air through the solenoid, throw it in a bag and sell as new. Highly recommend getting from the dealer.

I was looking at fordpartsgiant.com. the price is $301. The dealer wants $426. Should I go with the dealer or just get it online?

And since im in the transmission. Any recommendations on other known parts I should replace? or maybe a shift kit from summit racing?

I had transmission problems that were fixed in 2011 based on a TSB. Below is what I posted in a different thread:

My 2005 LS Ultima had transmission work done in 2011; the mileage on the car was 43,658. The car felt “jerky” when accelerating, which was confirmed by the tech. To further quote the tech’s analysis:

“Vehicle feels jerky when accelerating. Traced to transmission. Trans was flaring and not staying engaged. Removed trans and inspection found servo bores worn. TSB repair #09-12-12. Repaired servo bores with kit and overhauled trans”

In layman’s terms, apparently the servo bores wear because of the steel shafts operation against the aluminum case holes. I was told that the repair consists of increasing the diameter of the holes and inserting steel sleeves.

Anyhow, your car's issue may just be the solenoid pack, but, you can also check whether the TSB and link shown below also applies to your car.

What are the symptoms? I mean I have all of my gears. its just the shift points are fishy, and then the loud thump going from reverse to park. (kinda sounds like a hammer in my transmission.) Don't know much about transmissions but this doesn't sound like a driveway fix if that is the problem.

I don't recall having the loud thump going from reverse to park. It was just that during acceleration the gear shifting was "jerky". Like joegr mentioned, your issue may just be the solenoid assembly. I suggest searching this forum or Google search your car with the trans issues and you'll get what others did to resolve the problem; there should also be a manual on how to perform the solenoid assembly change within this forum.

LSV8FAN at the risk of sounding like Carl from Slingblade I LIKE THE WAY YOU TALK ! You make a lot of sense , I'm starting to have a few shift issues and from what I've read and herd if your going to solve it you also have to do the bore & sleeve on the servo . I have herd of folks spending 2K on a rebuild and it does same thing because Servo sleeveing was not done ! That would make you cry !!! LOL

I'm having this issue with my 06 its under warranty but its not an issue that cause a check engine light so how to i get the dealer to understand and fix the problem

Get the service writer or one of the mechanics to go on a short drive with you and demonstrate the symptoms to them. Also, even without the light triggered, they may be able to pull some pending codes. Unless they are full up with non-warranty work, it's to their advantage to work on it.

You should also make them aware of the TSB (TSB 09-12-12 JUN 09 A/T - Loss Of 2nd/3rd/5th Gears/Ratio DTC's Set) and ask them to evaluate it against your car's symptoms.
