Transmission revs like it's in neutral while in D

On my '94 I was driving home from work. The transmission appears to been making a whining sound lately or something is... Next thing I know, the car revs as if it's in neutral. It's revving when I jump on the gas, but then it shifts back into gear and works fine. I assume this is a common issue... anyone know what's wrong?
 
Its your MLVP sensor, look for a similar thread , you'll find your answer
 
20 bucks @ napa, autozone, etc... 2 8mm bolts and you're done, fixed... Ask 'em for a "neutral safety switch". This is what their little computer knows it by...
 
I'm going to try this before swapping out the 1-2 and 2-3 pistons next month.
 
Well it seems I'm not the only one who has this problem. But when I was leaving the golf course a few minutes ago and I pulled out it did the exact samething twice and it chirped the tires twice everyone was probably thinking that I had a lead fott or something. But it is quite annoying when driving. But I guess I will be stopping by NAPA on my way to class tonight!

Don't make the mistake I made and try to drag race with it like that, I burned up the tires in smoke to the tune of a 3 second 60 foot time:Bang My Mustang with about 80 more hp is easier to drive off the line.

at what speed and rpm is it acting up at .
 
Roughly 50 MPH, 1500-2000 RPMs or whatever that is in overdrive. Then randomly it's in neutral (the shifter's not, but the transmission feels like it is), then it goes back to normal.

I'll try replacing that sensor since it's cheap.

my mark is doin the same thing, been doin it for a wile... i jus been tryin to baby it along till i throw another trans in there. But i think i will give the sensor a try since it is cheap. Hopefully its not too late, i been driving it like this for a while.

I drag raced with it and was doing 2.2xx 60 ft's

My experience was bad for other reasons, for one, the man spraying water for the burnout box sprayed so much water that you could not pull around it to get in the lanes. As a result the cars were pulling the water from their front wheels to the line, and combined witht the tranny slipping it was like being on glass. I'm going to try it at Stanton instead of 131 in a few weeks and try to improve on it.
 
If I remember correctly you may have to put the shifter into neutral while you do it, then line up the line on the new sensor... Just make sure you have the ebrake on and chock up the wheels good!

Just got back from the test drive after replacing my MLVP sensor and all I have to say is :L nice inexpensive part and its making my car run like a champ again! Thanks for your help guys!
 
Well my problem persists even after replacing this sensor... and time is only making it worse.

There's a horirble whining sound coming from it so I only drove it about a half mile or so. I think the transmission fluid may be gone or low. How do you check it on these cars? :)

The dipstick for the tranny fluid is on the passenger side of the car behind the engine
 
my car has done that twice. ie. i was going roughly 40 and i push the gas pedal about 50% and it revved like i was in my mustang ready to dump the clutch. both times i let off before it caught a gear, it still chirped the tires. i been driving with o/d off for the last 2 days it's been fine. more than fine really, it seems faster with o/d off. today im changing the sensor, cost me $23.99 at autozone. if it does blow up i'm looking forward to the art carr trans and converter anyways
 
Mlps Sensor

Someone please explain what this does and what are the symptoms when it goes bad. From what I am reading I think mine is bad, but I want to be sure.
