I have a 01 LS V8, was driving home from work and the engine cut out for a sec and came back, following this there was intense pinging at most speeds and finally I got a check engine light.........
Any ideas...

Sounds like it could be many things. First thing I would check is fuel flow/pressure.

pull the code - it will tell you what the issue is. If you can't pull the code yourself, goto autozone and they'll pull it for free. Their tool will only pull the generic codes (which are the same for all cars) but it's a good start.
