using V8 in datsun project

I wouldn't add cammer to anything but the 427, but I thought hey if it floats your boat, then call it whatever you want since they shared OHC technolgy. Fortunatly a OHC is all that the 4.0 V-6 and 427 shared. Love the sound and smell of raw power, burning tires, and wasted fuel don't you?

Purely orgasmic.

Anyone got a paper towel I can borrow now? :D

The 5R55W tranny was used in the 02+ Explorers not the S.

Rocket - where are you getting your information from?

Explorer 02-03 5 Sp Rwd/4x4 V6 4.0l V8 4.6l 5r55w
Explorer 04-05 5 Sp Rwd/4x4 V6 4.0l V8 4.6l 5r55s
Explorer 06 5 Sp Rwd/4x4 V6 4.0l 5r55s

That is why I don't call my 4.6 SOHC engine a 4.6 cammer, because it wasn't originally called that, so why add that name onto it? :)
The 4.0 SOHC is referred to as the Cammer in the Explorer to distinguish it from the 4.0 OHV pushrod V6; there's no pushrod version of the 4.6, but there are two OHC versions of the 4.6 (SOHC and DOHC), so it wouldn't be a useful nomenclature. Ford never referred the the 4.0 SOHC as a Cammer, but when did they refer to anything other than the 5.0 Cammer as a Cammer?

Your truck should have the 5R55E tranny.
Yep, it does. I read somewhere that it was a 5R55N, but when I just checked the reference page at ExplorerForum, it is, indeed, a 5R55E.

Man, I hate it when that happens.

BTW, I can't find the reference where it was called the 4.0 Cammer, but it was being called that before the 5.0 Cammer was introduced. :p

Dealers gave it that nickname Sooner. And many also called it the SOHC motor (pronounced "sock") No matter who calls it what, we know what they're talking about. Kinda like when people call my Cobra a Mustang. Well, they're right...and they're wrong.

The only other trure "Cammer" name I know of was the 427 SOHC engine of the 60's. The bad boy that Shelby stuffed into AC cobra's to give us the orginal Cobra and set the bar for all performance cars since. Google "AC Cobra or Shelby Cobra" This will give you some history of the 427 Cammer or follow this link for more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_FE_engine. It say the 427 was for NASCAR, but I have read many times that it was also in the AC cobra's. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

04-05 4 door Explorers still had the 5R55W 5 speed auto tranny.

The 06 4 door Explorers had the 6 speed 6R60 tranny for the 3V SOHC 4.6 V8 and the 5R55S for the SOHC 4.0 V6.

You're wrong. ;)
The 427 SOHC with its 6' timing chain was never available in anything Shelby made; it was only available from Ford as a crate engine. The 427 that powered the Cobra, GT-500, and GT-40 was the old FE big-block 427, which was definitely a pushrod V8. They used a Side-Oiler 427, IIRC, but it was still a pushrod V8.

BTW, the least potent configuration for the 427 Cammer was with a single 4bbl, and was rated at 635hp.

I would love to see this project get off the ground!

I race against Maita's with everything and the kitchen sink in them - scary.

According to this page ( http://www.explorerforum.com/ntrprize/ ), the 5R55E was supplanted by the 5R55W in 2002, and the 5R55W was the only slushbox in the Explorer 'til '06 (it doesn't list the tranny model number for '06).

IIRC, the only mechanical difference between the 5R55N and the 5R55W is the gear ratios. But if you quote me on that, I'll deny that this conversation ever took place. ;)

The 06 tranny model for the 3V SOHC V8 4 door Explorers is the 6R60. The 4.0 SOHC V6 4 door Explorers got the 5R55S then as standard equipment. I am not aware if the V6'ers could upgrade to a 6R60 tranny or not that year.

Hehehehe. Yep, they both are very similar trannies, along with the 5R55S too. They were based upon the 5R55's of the past but are in their own generation.

Might need that motor for my LS

Think I just found out tonight that I have to replace the motor in my 01 LS. She sounds like the bottom end is about to come loose. Let me know if you might be interested in selling it off, what you would take for it and where you are located.

Thanks
Shane
