So, as I was car shopping (some of you may know already) I came across a 02 LS withen my price range but it was a v6. The v8 was kind of set into my mind but, as I think about it the v6s are more affordable, and I dont think i'll be needing the extra 30 hp.

Heres what I know:
V8- Jag 3.9 250 horse 267 lb-ft
V6- Ford 3.0 220 horse 215 lb-ft

My question is besides one being a jag engine and one being a ford engine are there any major disadvantages for the v6? I am also assuming the coil problems still pretain to the v6s.

Also: The LS I found was a manual; big plus for me!!:D

V8 hands down. Everyone here will tell you that.

V8, gen II (2003-2006). You'll notice the difference if you test drive one.

Well, gen IIs are pretty expensive. And altough v8s have more power idk if I REALLY need that.

Its not much more power and if you think a gen II LS is expensive walk away now.

With repairs you can end up spending much more on a first. Usually older cars require more maintenance.

I dont think anyone on here will complain of having too much power...LOL if anything its not enough.

gen ii are expencive up front from what ive heard , but gen 1s are more expencive in the long run, also its a LUXURY BRAND regardless of what you do its expencive

and yeah we really dont NEED anything lol might as well get a civic lol

V8s are nice wish i could have gotten one but im happy not buying gas a sfrequently

The V6 gets the same mileage as the V8. Its about a 1mpg difference but much less power.

I have a genI V6 and 2 genII V8s. There is absolutely no benefit to the V6. It gets a whopping ~1mpg better than the V8. The V6 runs out of steam much, much sooner than the V8. There are issues the V8 have that the V6 doesn't, such as the valve cover gaskets and (apparently) tensioners; but the V6 also has it's quirks. The pcv hose is a common failure and the intake plenum must be removed to replace it. The plenum also must be removed to change half the plugs. I've done it a few times and my best time is 3 hours. I can do the V8 in that time, but that is taking a fair amount of breaks.

Were it my money I would do what I had to do to acquire a 2006. The '06 seems to be the best.

Very well said. The only reason I'm considering is the price, I know I can find a v8 withen range, but this one was just a thought. Thanks for all the good advice, and the civic comment made me laugh... :D I dont have the money to put up FRONT for the gen II but a 02 v8 shouldn't be a problem.

Just make sure that the Gen I V8 you by is thoroughly looked over for leaks, transmission, COPs, ball joints, etc. Always get a second opinion.

Will do! Most likely have a mechanic look at it second before buying!

Second, third, fourth whatever it is, I'm for the second gen V8. I test drove an '02 when I was bored one weekend when I was looking to buy and I thought that hauled ass. Then I got behind the wheel of my current ride. What a difference.

You'll be surprised depending on the area you're searching you be able to find an early Gen II base model V8 in the same ball park of an '02 V8.

The difference between the '6' and the '8' is very noticeable. I left my almost new '02 at the dealer for them to do something-or-other, and the loaner was a little more basic than my Sport which has about everything but chrome wheels. (It came with chrome wheels, but I was unwilling to pay $200 more EACH for the chrome and prevailed on them to do a swap.)

A mile down the road with the loaner, I started to go onto the X-way and it scared me. I looked, at the earliest chance, and found the '6'. I drove it for several days and I don't remember getting ANY better gas mileage.

^ agreed, as a high school student, I don't see the big need for the extra 30 horse. I am a big car enthusiast, as it would be a nice extra but... still not sure yet.

The V8 also has the message center. There's no replacement for knowing just how many miles until you really run out of gas.

When the manual fails...well good luck on getting replacements parts for the transmission.

a manual v6 would probably be the most enjoyable for driving.

the only problem i have with my V8 is that it is not powerful enough, my first LS was a V6, this seemed to make the problem worse.

+1 on second gen, the power is nice but it the tons of little improvements that come together that make it so much better

also, dont expect any real fuel savings by going with the smaller motor. the 1 mpg just is not worth it
