LS 2003 3.0, valve cover gaskets R&R.

Lower IMT was leaking oil. I did IMT O-rings, pcv and tube, upper intake manifold gaskets and new COPs and plugs. Found oil on plugs 2 & 3. I’m about to lift the valve covers off to R&R the gaskets with VICTOR REINZ VS50413
I’m very confused about the half rounds on the rear side of the valves that the cover gasket runs across when reinstalled. No one ever mentions these half rounds, should they just be cleaned up on the top surface and left alone??

Looks like these half rounds should be removed and then reset with Ultra Black? If so, what is a safe way to pull them out and reset them??
