valve tap?

Unfortunately I can't tell you what it is, but mine does the exact same thing. There are others out there that have the same noise, but I've yet to see the cause and cure. I have been driving mine for over a year like this now and still runs fine. Most of the ones I've seen with this have been a first gen though???

were you always up to date on your oilchanges?

when i worked at Chrysler i had two 3.5 engines that sounded like diesels, the little bearing on the rocker arm took a crap and it was grinding on the cam lobe.......eating away at it

but the 4.6's cams are set up different so i doubt thats happening here, or the others............valve spring?

some have cam tensioner issues, pull the valve covers and the front cover and have a look at everything

heh well iv had some people look at it 1 thought it was valve spring iv had this problem for about a year now also its a 93 iv heard 93-95 have bad valve springs so maybe thats it and yes i kept up with my oil changes.

Right the engine in the vid looks like a 98. definitly a gen two mark 97-98. it doesn't look to be a 93 engine. good luck

Just because it "isn't" a 93 doesnt mean it's impossible to break a valve spring.

Pull the valve cover and see what's up.

IMHO I would just "R&R"/Remove and Replace the engine.

by the time you wrestle the valve cover off, you could drop the motor out the bottom and have it sitting on the ground in front of you.

chunk another non rattling motor in there and go on your happy way.

I pulled my passenger valve cover and could'nt find anything, as that's where the sound is coming from.

I have another engine just sitting and waiting, I can't justify pulling it yet as it still runs very well.

do what chicken mentioned, sometimes you gotta stare at the thing and youll eventually see the problem........get a rubber mallet start tapping stuff, turn the engine with the covers off and watch stuff move......

The only thng that I seen and maybe I should have mentioned it in my previous post was that the secondary cam chain would be loose and then the engine would be rotated and then it would tighten. Turn the engine again or a few times and then it would loosen again, wasn't sure if this was a problem or not?? I do know that the noise gets better when you give it some gas and this would make sense on a defective cam tensioner???

Does anybody know if these can be changed in the car and without having to remove the cams???

Sounds like a sticky follower to me. Had the problem in TerminVIIIor for about 30 min.

Then it went away on its own and never returned.

Run some Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and then get the oil changed... it might work. That definately doesn't sound like you dropped a valve, I would bet on the lash adjuster like someone else said.

so yea thats not my mark 8 in vid but it sounds just like it also i cant afford a new engine lol thats 2200 just for engine. someone told me it could be a follower or valve spring but said if it is he wont fix cost to much and not worth it... also what is a lash adjuster? never heard of that. thanks for all the comments i hope to get this fixed soon

I would search for another used engine and hold onto so when it does go. The big question is how long can you drive it the way it is? I've driven mine for the past year, put on about 6,000mi. as long as you can deal with the ticking?

+1 on that. If my car hasn't been started in a few weeks, they'll tick-tick-tick then stop.

my '93 did that too...that's after the previous owner left it sitting for a year but it went away after driving it for 30mins or so...never returned

ok well this i is the history of my car lol my dads boss wife had it to get her nails done for about 100k miles. Iv had for about 12k and the tap has been goin for about 6-7k. Now it was sitting for about 1-2 years before i got everything done hoses belts and suspension. Also my car over heated but i let cool down but drove warm (new driver) *very bad choice* dident have cell and was cold out :(. and the tap started :( so no clue :(.
