Water pump...

I opened up my cap to the a 3/8" square drive. Came off no problem. Whoever designed that cap with the 1/4" square drive should be shot!

1/4 inch on bottom, 3/8th adapter in the middle, 1/2 adapter on top with a breaker bar= no problems.

just what i was plannin on doin :)

Don't get too excited, I didn't have a very hard time stripping out that little quarter inch hole... Rather than apply any steady force, I just give it a couple quick taps and it opens. Prolonged force just ended up damaging the top of the plug.

Penetrate it with some oil and just give it a couple hard, fast smacks on the handle with your hand.. that's worked for me.

bump

*edit*

How do you strip out a hole designed for a ratchet by smacking the handle on a 1/4 drive ratchet with your hand once? If it starts chewing up the metal, you stop... But applying the leverage associated with a breaker bar would certainly have mauled the top.

Not really because you can go very slowly instead of using a shocking force. I've done it on 2 different cars and they came off easily with no damage done.

Just have the car run until operating temp has been achieved and then it comes right off with the shock factor with ease.

Allright guys.......

Ease up on the attacks, and name calling. FYI, I weld a 13 MM nut to the top of the cap if I ever have problems taking it off. This effectively ends all problems with a stripped out hole.

That is a GREAT idea actually Mike....thanx for the idea.

As for the cap, I have a brandy new one sitting around somewhere. I purchased a new cross-over tube and a new cap, then found out that when you order the cross-over tube you get a new cap with it. So, if you need it let me know and I will find it and hook ya up.

Where did you buy the new coolant crossover tube from? Ford doesn't make them anymore? Do you have another source?

I purchased it from Maxx at 5 Star Ford about a year or so ago....give him a call he might still have one (1-800-866-1520 ext. 236).

that sounds good, ill have to try that. But as for now, i do not have access to a welder...I tried clamping my vice grips on there warmin up the car, givin it a couple of good whacks, nothin...tried constant pressure, nothin. I am at a real loss here.

I tightened up my clamps and got rid of any leaks. Once the t-stat opens up i DO have pressure in my hoses. And speculation from someone else, i dont believe i have a blown head gasket (no smoke or noise or anything).

Any other tricks for gettin this dang cap off?
