I have a 2000 LS Sport V8 and there is some weird engine ticking noise coming from the drivers side front wheel. It only happens when I start the car and goes away when it warms up. I can barely hear it with the radio off and all the windows rolled up. I did a search and some of the results were thin oil, loud injectors, etc.. What do you guys think?

Does the sound increase and decrease as u give it gas or simply fade away? Also, have u had an opportunity to listen for the sound with the hood open to better assesses where the sound is originating?

I had/have a sound like that. I really used to notice it when going through a drive through. To me it almost sounded like a noisy injector. Since I don't go throug drive throughs anymore (broken regulator, waiting for the new one) I haven't noticed it. Mine did change tempo with rpm's.

The one thing I was afraid of was a problem with the exhaust manifold/gasket. That looks like a BEOTCH to RR.

Is it really a ticking noise, or could it be more of a rattle? A slight rattle when the engine is cold is a warning sign that the timing chain tensioners are worn out. - That you need to do something about ASAP.

A ticking could just be a noisy injector or a little to much clearance on one of the valves. - That you can ignore if it goes away when the engine is warmed up.

The ticking sounds as though you were tapping a pencil on a desk on its point. I can hear it clearly coming from the drivers side front wheel. Its not harsh, but just caught my attention because it just started a few weeks ago. The car still warms up the same, and it goes away once I start driving. What do you mean by rattle? As a rattle you can see or hear? It vibrates a couple of times when it warms up but once I put it into drive and go, everything is calm.

+1 That is what I was wondering....

I am really curious about this too. My car has a tapping/ticking noise as well. I do not hear it right at initial startup, but as the engine idles down slightly. Same thing?

I had somewhat of ticking noise also ended up being COP(s)..guess it was on it's way out.

Exactly when you start to hear it.

Curious if you every figured this problem out. Your car still making the noise?

I get a slight tapping on startup...i think its a pulley.

I also have a slight tapping at start up from the driver side. Noticed it the other day but it went away not 60 seconds after I started the car. Barely had time to pop the hood before it went away.

Seems common enough not to worry to much?

ac compressor on or off? probably way too obvious a solution but I have the same ticking when my compressor is warm..been like that for years...

I have a habit of turning my air off everytime I leave my car. I don't like starting it with any of the accessories running.

All of my accessories are off. I don't like leaving them on either. The tapping is constant, but is softer at times. It sounds as if it is coming from the drivers side in the COP area. I just changed all of my COP's and plugs. Hope it is something simple.

No need for this at all. The PCM disables the AC compressor until after the engine has reached idle.

Thats awesome never knew! My Scion wasn't that smart haha. It'll take me awhile to break the habit I'm sure..

And maybe its just me but I still don't really like my a/c on until the engine is warmed up.. not just idle. Why is it that when using auto it always has the a/c on even when using the heat (85*)? Is this a way for the system to filter the air as it only uses the air filter when the a/c is on?

It helps to defog the windows.

I had this same noise when i first got my LS. I was still covered under factory warranty so i took it to the dealership and it took the mechanic a whole 2 seconds to tell me that my main crank pulley was making this noise. We took a look at it while the engine was idling and you could tell that the pulley was not rotating squarley as if it was slightly bent. The shop replaced the pulley and the sound went away.

I beleive the sould has come back. Not as loud as it used to be. Ill have to check the pulley to see if it is the same problem.

I get off of work real late and i notice that when i ease my foot of the acelerator i can hear the ticking noise. I give it a little gas, staying at 15mph or so and then take my foot of the acelerator andi can hear the ticking noise. Im unsure if this ticking is related to my prior problem but its deff not as loud.

This is part of my claims report/ warranty repair history. The first picture shows the work that was done with the crank pulley when i braught the vehicle in.

The secondand third are from the prior owner and it describes how the ticking noise was occuring to them also. They braught it in to the dealership twice for this problem

It helps to defog the windows.

It also makes the air more comfortable inside by lowering the humidity. There's no way I would or could wait for engine to warm up before turning the AC on.

Is this pulley under the valve covers?

No pulleys under any covers. The crank is at the bottom center of the engine. I need mine on my 06 replaced, but can't find any new ones.
