I own a 2k Lincoln LS V6 5spd. In the past few months ive noticed a very noticable ping. Its not the gas because ive tried at least 10 different types of 93 octane. I understand that pinging is usually suppose to occur during heavy load or cheapper gas. My LS pings under normal driving conditions. It doesn't do it in first gear but only gets worst with every gear, especially in 3rd and 4th between 1800 and 2500 RPM's. Cruising at around 40MPH in 4th gear makes the loudest ping. It completly stops pinging if I gas it a little which is totaly backwards!? All 6 coils were changed 6 months ago as well as a vacuum leak which was causing the engine to run lean. I was thinking maybe the knock sensor is bad but I don't have CEL. Im stumped.

A hot spot...a lean injector...bad EGR...and a couple of other things can cause detonation like you describe. This can be a VERY serious problem and should be looked at immediately by a qualified tech.

Im not getting a CEL (check engine light) Wouldn't a lean injector or a problem with the EGR throw a CEL?

what is the "ping" sound like? my v8 kind of has that diesel throaty rat-tat-tat sound at low rpms's. especially @ idle....

I had the same thing and I just started paying the price for better gas. I was sceptical too. Try some 93 octane gas from a major gas comany: Shell, BP, Exxon, etc. Hope it clears up!:D

I always use premium from all sorts of different major brand stations. makes the same sound. just not sure if it's pinging or not.

One thing you might try is a good fuel system cleaner like Techron, not the Proguard which I think is diluted techron. Those 99 cent cleaners really don't help. Use something that is good and usually expensive. Years back the magazines did some tests and said only the Techron really does anything noticable in one tankful.

You might have carbon deposits in the system. Also if you are a "grandma drives it to church on Sunday" driver, you may need to romp on it once in awhile to clean it out.

It sounds like you have a bigger problem than just carbon deposits tho. Sounds like a timing or fuel mix issue.

But my solutions are relatively cheap to try.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

See I have the same problem I just went down and bought an octane booster and filled it with 93 and octane booster and I have a very very quick and small ping now vs the heavy long from 600-1,800

Next Im going to get the fuel system cleaner and run that threw it ....Ive tried to pull all the timing I could with the x-cal with -14 and there was no difference...so Im not sure its timing....I have not had any other problems....im gonna run a the DTC check again and see if there is any "hidden" codes...

the problem I have is I don't know if it's pinging or how to describe the sound. just throaty rat-tat-ta sound under light throttle at lower rpm's. at idle sounds like crap too.
