Alright guys here's the age old question. What gears should I get for my 96 LSC? I drive it everyday, and I love it but its a slow turd. It has the 3:27 gears now and I want it to get out of its own way. Dont get me wrong these cars motivate themselves but i am used to a mustang with gears. What is the best gears to get and not rev it to hell driving it everyday to work and also letting the wifey drive it.;)

here's my question about gears, sorry to hijack, but i was reading about G8 GT had 3.08, and Jags, and Benz's among other similar cars have 3.25?-3.5? gears and they go like hell, so why do we need such high gears

Apples and oranges... They may have different ratios and number of ratios in the trans, different sized wheels, different engine set ups, different weight vehicles etc etc. Overall ratio is the one to compare.

Most cars have a lot more HP then we do... and you don't know what their trans ratios are...

4.30's is what I would get.

The only thing I don't like about them is you are getting close to need to shift into 4th in the 1/4....

Not even close... especially NA. With 4.30's shifting at 7000 you hit 4th gear at 124mph, haven't done the math for 4.56's but i'm sure it would be around 115mph. Even on spray you won't hit that MPH in the 1/4 mile...

but how would 4.56s be on the road? My Mark will only be a fair weather (summer) fun car, but still. those seem pretty steep. Would be awesome, though. :)

^^ The 107 is for the top of 3rd gear...

Anything less than 3.90s, don't bother. But you probably don't want to go over 4.56s.

I'm thinking of 4.56 as well for the track. I havn't made my mind up for sure yet due to the highway driving I like to do with my car. I want everything but I dont know if I can have a clear mind driving the highway speeds of 70-80 with 4.56. Sounds like abuse to me. The 3.73's i'm currently running rev the motor pretty good at 80, I would hate to see it with 4.56. My car is not a DD but If I want to go visit a friend out of town its nice to drive the mark if I want to. When I settle for a track only mark I will be going 4.56 or 4.30. I will install the new gears in my original center section so if I don't like it will be easier to sell and try somthing different.

Gearing isn't a problem for me....being from central IL (in the middle of corn fields) and only having to drive to and from (40 miles) the semi once or twice a month. Plus I need a pickup anyway.....the town I live in hates my 13:1 four wheeler engine. They are really going to hate the Harley.

I never agree with anyone on this, but anything over 3.73 is rather unnecassary to me. I've run them all, and I hate those super tall gears, and with 4.56 you no more than get going before its shifting. And cruising, you're wasteing gas. Unless your going to the track, ALOT, then 4.10 is absolute top of the spectrum and even those i'm not all that fond of.

I wonder if Gear Vendors makes an overdrive unit that would fit under the Mark VIII...

back in 99 or 2000 on "the other" mark 8 board a guy called "wuzfuzz" had the gear vendors overdrive on a 456 geared car.
he enjoyed it..

it's kinda pricey tho

I kida agree, I went right to the 4.10:1 and for a car that will see the track may 2 times a year it was a little to much. I'm going to buld an other one with 3.73:1 since most (95%) of the driveing will be city/hiway.

Dont get me worng I love the 4.10s but....IMO I'd go with 3.73 because make for a better daly.

The mustang on the other hand will get 4.10's or 4.30's

I wouldn't bother with anything less then 4.10s. I will probably end up moving up to 4.56s.

People who complain about the revs with gears are either to young to know or to old to remember the muscle cars with no overdrive. I've had 4 speed cars with 3.55s that reved higher on the highway then my Mark with 4.10s
