What gears do I need?

Mileage? With 4.30s on the highway I can get 23 mpg. I can drive 2 hours through the mountains to the track, run at the track all day and drive back through the mountains and STILL average 19 mpg.

Not very impressive mileage. I drove my car from tampa to atlanta when I bought it, one tank of gas and a about 1/8th tank left. 18 gallons in the tank, 496 miles to my house (north side of atlanta) Computer showed 31mpg. Most 4 banger econo uber mileage cars can't even do better than that.

First off plenty of old school muscle cars could be ordered with 4.xx gears from the factory and how many could you get an OD trans?

They also only had 3 or maybe 4 speed trannies. They didn't know what a 5 speed manual was back then.

You're compering old muscle cars with huge push-rod engines that had insane low end torque to small modular engine with no low end torque  These cars are pretty heavy ,have pretty much no low end torque ,they need as much gear as possible.

Like stated before, anything less then 4.10 is just waste of $$ on a Mark VIII.

Less FoMoCo, GM still uses pushrod engines, mostly 305 adn 350ci. Chrysler still has a few pushrods. Ford woulda been wise to keep at least the 302 alive, you can't beat them for durability raw power.

1997-19998 Mark 8, bout 3750lbs.
1967 mustang fastback 302 right at 3400lbs
1971 chevelle 454 ss 4000lbs (two rear available, standard 3:31 or 4.10 posi)
1967 GTO 3700lbs with 400ci v8 3.23 standard, 4.33 posi option

They all ran mid to high 14's. some were low 15's in the quarter. Their 0-60's were random, the big v8 goat ran it in 5.8 with the 4.33's. 1993 mustang 0-60 was 5.9 (with the cobra package) quarter mile in 14.5 it ran 3.55 gears

Not with 4.30s you didn't. :p

lol no i wouldn't have.

Just a side note on the torque these motors can produce, a stock 1998 Navigator had 230HP 325#s torque. These motors can dish out torque just as well as any other if built right. Considering a 5.0 stang had 225hp and 300#s torque using a pushrod, i'd say the numbers remain very close

Got it in an your right I wished I had gone 4:30s but we drive a lot on the highway. He shimmed the t-lok for me and it is like a posi. If you get in it, it hauls ass. Now I need a shift kit or jmod so it shifts worth a damn.:D
