What kinda oil do you use?

When I emailed Mobil the summer before last to see what they said about leaving the oil in longer because it was synthetic, they told me to change it according to what the owners manual intervals says still.

thats because their oil sucks. its on of the worst rated synthetics on the market. watch this video.:

check out the whole website. just knocks mobile one the whole time.

When I worked for Briggs and Stratton, I assisted with the failure tests done with engine oil. Granted a Briggs engine on a woodchipper is a bit different than a car engine, but since then I only use synthetic. Clean oil they were about the same, but the synthetic did alot better at higher hours and with overspeeded engines.

I just put in motorcraft 5w-20 part synthetic, with the 820s filter. Go walmart.

That's all marketing BS... Mobil 1 is top grade oil and run by more race cars than any other oil. Doesn't mean it's neccessary the best oil on the planet but it is definately top notch stuff.

Agreed, I'm not a Mobil1 fan, but their oil is fine.

When it comes to Amsoil my friend always reminds me that the Amsoil motocross team doesn't use Amsoil in their bikes...

and I know for certian I saw the "pennzoil" TOP FUEL team pouring Royal Purple into the sleek yellow dragster too.

ok so i finally remembered to take pics so here ya go. first was a motorcraft fl820s(all 3 filters were the same applications). then a "premium" el-cheap-o from lee auto (i think) just one of the down town parts stores we use at work. then a fram! i couldn't believe how cheap ly made the fram is! i mean wtf!! what a piece of crap, cardboard glued to cardboard, junk! and the metal was by far the thinest.

Holy balls! Is that real?! I LOVE the grippy frams but I'd never seen the inside of one. NUTS!!! ALSO: Good side-by-side for size. I thought the FL820S was supposed to be shorter for easier fitment?

i swear that its real, i cut them open myself! the new fl820s will be shorter, we dont have any and might still be a couple months till we do.

i agree kid, send me one and ill open her up for ya

Where are the 'after' shots? I'd like to see how bad the fram looks

ive known for quite some time that the frams were junk. working for cat is what made me understand why the manufacturers filters are always the best ones to buy for your car and equipment. when a new engine is produced there is thousands upon thousands of dollars spent in developing a filter that will properly due the job by that manufacturer. the best filter for your car is made by the manufacturer of that car.

what you gonna use kid? i think a band saw would be best to slice it in half than a cut off wheel my method, first two filters were thrown away. thats why i just skinned them, but this way you can disassemble the filter. take out the spring on the top and the element comes right out.

usually the Frams, once u take it off after its been used u can feel the filtering element part loose on the inside...............

my boss buys Mobil 1 for our work trucks (F-550's) and he always buys Fram filters..........

every time i change the oil on the truck the insides are loose..........

Pssh, that's nothing. My old boss' dad's Jeep had two Frams explode on him. As in, he heard a pop and lost oil pressure. Huge puddle under the Jeep and oil EVERYWHERE. Turns out the casing split and sprayed its innards everywhere. He thought it was a fluke and kept on using the things, until about a year later when the same thing happened again. Early 90's Jeep 4.0 with 10w30 changed every 4,000 miles.

One of the machine shops that used to buy from us periodically saw engines in which the filter element got dissolved and sucked in through the rest of the system. Every single time, it was a Fram. Usually it was related to some idiot trying to drive 10,000 miles on an oil change, but even still... sheesh.

i run whatevers on sale in my mark......again its a D/D, I change it every 2500 miles and make sure its full.....as for filter....the pepboys proline filter is ALOT shorter as well.....not sure how good it is, just easier to get in

i just think its funny they are overpriced and so crappy yet the el-cheap-o down town parts store one looks about equal to a motorcraft

The thing about Frams is that they are the best selling filter on the road. They have a large following and most people don't know/care about filter construction. For this reason, Fram can get away with making a mediocre filter, for a larger price.
