whats the best oil to use

You're going to hear

Royal Purple
Mobile 1
Amsoil

Maybe others will be mentioned. I use 5W-30 Mobile 1 fully synthetic myself. It might cost but I only change it once every 7K to 8K miles. So really it's not that high as opposed to using conventional oil. I found that going to Wal-Mart and buying the 5 quart jug and one additional quart was way cheaper than any parts stores, even if they say it was on sale. Wal-Mart had them all beat.

One thing about fully synthetic is that even though all oil has settled into the pan after an overnight sit, when you crank the car, the important parts are coated and lubed for the next start.

the "best" is quite the debate.
i just use the cheap stuff and change it often.

on a related note, use the motorcraft oil filters. there not much more expensive, and the insides are built better.

I think mobil 1 is up there aswell as royal purple but i've only used mobil 1. I did my first oil change last year and it was on my mark- my oil change message has been on for probably atleast 3 months lol, but the car sits all the time so its fine. I try to start it every other day, i hate to let it sit and not start it up. What oil filter is better K&N or motorcraft?

Nothing wrong with motorcraft synthetic blend and appropriate motorcraft filter. Sure Amsoil or mobil1 are better but with a higher mileage vehicle that's already had all kinds of who know what oils in it...don't think you will see any benefit.

Why does it matter what oils were in the engine previously?

Pennzoil platinum ultra 5w20 with motorcraft filter.

Motorcraft syn blend is a very good oil. Filters are also very high quality.

Personally since they went to the sn spec ive been using qs defy and a pure one filter. Nit a fan of the new oil spec.

I do walmart oil changes. Motorcraft filter and 5-30 Supertech high mileage. It costs more then the basic pennzoil, Quaker State ect so I feel its better. Though I do get shit for using it.

P.s. Stay away from fram filters.

Ive been told changing back and forth between conventional and synthetic oils is not a good idea.

Also with a full synthetic you may notice the car to develop an oil leak that wasnt there previously. Or was it a thinner weight oil?

Again im not an expert on the topic but if you bought the car new and always used synthetic that would be different. I use synthetic blend in my LS and it comes out clean and is no different than the mobil1 full i used previously.

Ford actually recommends synthetic blend for the majority of vehicles. Only a few like the mustangs require full synthetic.

Supertech oil isn't too bad. It's considered a decent oil on the bitog forums.

Absolutely nothing wrong with alternating between synthetic and dino. Hell you can mix them. Just dont expect any if the benefits of synthetic.

Just about anything that meets API SN spec is going to be a very good oil.

So qs defy isn't good?

Care to explain how sn is a good oil when the spec effectively removes pretty much all the good anti wear metals?

Castrol full synthetic is also good
The reason why you can see leaks when changing to synthetic is its getting rid of the sludge left behind from conventional oil
As for mixing what do you think a syntactic blend is.

Yeah, I read up on sthm before I started using it and read nothing but good things from both bitog.com and others. If it works it works.

I am not sure if I would agree to this but it does make some sort of sense.

My 95 Yukon has had synthetic in it from the beginning of it's life and developed leaks. I guess every motor is going to start leaking at some point. My vette buddy who owns and operates a lube shop, he is a certified auto mechanic as well flipped all his cars to synthetic years ago as he was putting in fresh engines and his maintenance and engine builds were done well and more often than needed. All the motors developed leaks with synthetic faster than with conventional oil.

I am not an advocate of either. I switched my Yukon back to conventional and minimized the leaks, I am only down 1/3 of a quart every 3k miles instead of a quart.

a 95 yukon (or nearly any GM or chrysler product for that matter) is not a good example to use when oil leaks are the discussion. its nearly impossible to make them NOT leak.

These cars don't need as much with the anti-wear metals, the flat-tappet cars are the ones having problems with that.

I'm not saying that other oils outside of spec aren't good, I'm saying his decision might be made a bit easier if it's pointed out that it takes a very good oil to meet SN.

Then I should be afraid of my Castrol Synblend because its has both...oh, and I only use Motorcraft oil filters...All that for less than $30 @ Walmart

thems all good oil - i'd darned sure use synthetic and use what the car is supposed to use weight wise - the lifters are sensitive . I use 5W-30 Mobile 1 fully synthetic in the 94.
