Class II hitches are readily available for our cars but so far, I have not been able to find a Class III hitch. Anybody knows of a vendor who sells Class III hitches for our cars?

The reason I ask is because Class III hitches are rated up to 3500 lbs and I'm wanting to go beyond that weight limit. I'm going to tow a car that weights 3700 lbs so including the tow dolly, that'll put it above 4000 lbs.

OMFG now you want to tow with the fuggin thing!???!!? And tow something heavy like another car? I hope the fuggin thing explodes, I really do.
Fuggin idiot.

The Mark VIII is only rated for a total towing weight of 2000lbs/907Kg. No doubt the car could tow considerably more, but at the expense of safety/reliability/longevity etc. I'd be concerned about damaging the chassis and transmission - especially the transmission! (over heating) Probably not even legal to do, either.

Pictures of cars with a lot less pulling ability as trailer pullers:

Well, the Mark VIII has the 4R70W transmission which was also used in the 1993–2003 Ford F-Series truck. They seem to be able to tow quite a load. However, you do have a good point on transmission over heating. Looks like I need to install a large transmission cooler.

There is no boxed iron frame to support that kind of load. The cars you just posted all have frames.

How the hell do you get from wanting to tow the car the wrong way to towing something with it that it can't handle? Are you trying to piss real Mark enthusiests off or are you the basdard child of BodyByASS?

All those cars and trucks you showed have frames... The mark is a unibody ( a pretty weak one at that) it can not tow a car or big trailer! Buy a pickup.

Good point, but the Chrysler 300m shown in the picture towing a rather large trailer is unibody construction like our Mark VIII's. Also, unlike a trailer, a tow dolly has little tongue weight. Tongue weight and load leveling bars for sway control is what is hard on unibody construction.

If a 300 drove off a cliff would you?

I say go tow the fuggin thing. Hopefully you will rip out the unibody and crash the car and it will be totaled then you don't come one here talking about the stupid chit you did and the stupid chit you are about to do to a car that used to be something special.

According to Chrysler's website, the 300 has a towing capacity of 1000lbs and a maximum towing capacity of 2000 lbs. Neither of those vehicles (at first I thought the second vehicle was a Magnum, but it could be a 300 Touring station wagon - not available in USA) have any business pulling those triple axle trailers - even the Airstream website warns against using a tow vehicle that doesn't meet the minimum towing requirements. Sure, pretty much any vehicle can pull quite a big load, but you'll sacrifice safety and longevity doing it.

Thanks for all the concerns for this once tenderly cared for car. Because it cannot be towed, it is now going to be enslaved to the laborious work of towing a heavy load for 1500 miles toiling through rugged mountains and desolate desert. But hey, unlike many Lincolns, at least this car was saved from a horrible and painful death of injesting Sodium Silicate "Cash for Clunkers". If it dies, at least it'll die with honor.

Regarding the legal aspects, I looked up what the law is for towing using a tow dolly in California. It looks like I'm good from a legal stand point.

"No passenger vehicle or any vehicle under 4,000lbs. unladen may tow
more than 1 vehicle in combination unless an auxiliary or tow dolly may be
used with towed vehicle; no vehicle under 4,000lbs. unladen may tow a
vehicle more than 6,000lbs; the raised end of the motor vehicle being
towed by another vehicle using tow dolly must be secured by 2 separate
chains, cables, or equivalent devices; drawbar connection between 1
vehicle towing another may not exceed 15’. Max. speed for any vehicle
towing another is 55mph. Advisable to carry bill of sale. Lights of towed
vehicle must be operational. Brake lights and signal lamps must be
operational. Brakes must be sufficient to stop within a specified distance,
according to vehicle weight, at 20mph."

Pay me and I'll come with my truck and trailer and tow you where ever you want to go, but for the love of god don't tow over 2 tons BEHIND the mark.

Unless you have over sized brakes your car will not meet this requirement! My 97 ford pulling a trailer could barley do that. And not to mention the added strain on the rear airbags!!!! I'd rent a truck!!!!! Don't bash your mark!!

I don't see why the brakes would be inadequate for what I'm doing. I'm getting a tow dolly that has surge brakes so basically, I'll have brakes on every wheel.

i'm not gonna lie, i definitely think this is about as bad as ideals get, that poor motor shouldn't have to try to move 4 tons (2 ton car + 2 ton trailer) down the road, when i had my mark i had to use it to tow my boat (1500lbs) and it did ok, but during a trip through the kills of kentucky it was struggling and overheated once, and i'm pretty sure that had some thing to do with having to replace the trans a few months later.

also just because you where able to find pictures of people doing stupid sh!t online, doesn't make it a good ideal to do yourself. but in the end it is your car so it is your choice to do with it what you will.

just dont be surprised if the repair bill is more than you could get a beater truck for!

hell fukc it, if your gonna tow more than the car was designed for, why not tow more than the hitch was designed for? think about it, you could be out there, the perfect storm on the HWY.

I can see green goop all over the interstate now.

I hope no one else gets hurt when your air ride explodes and fix a flat gets under your rear wheels.

It's available!!! I was able find a Class III hitch rated for a gross trailer weight up to 5000 lbs and tongue weight up to 500 lbs.

Thanks for your concern regarding the motor and transmission. This car was once a pampered California garage queen car but life is not going to be as easy as it was with the bad econony. It's now going to have to do some work and break a sweat now and then. No longer can it live the fake Califoronia lifestyle. It's now going to have to live a life of reality.

But seriously, the drivetrain (tranny / engine) on this car is very similar to a Ford F-150 truck (4.6L engine / 4R70W transmission ). This car is "Ford tough". It's built like a rock.

They also make condoms for elephants...if you wanna try everything thats available be my guest.

Ed Hall, you are a POS and I swear to gawd if I ever saw you IRL I would beat the ever living hell out of you and then chit on your head.
