Also, there are different not-exactly-compatible versions of the PCM code--that's why the tuner needs your VIN before he can build the tune.

No, that is why you get the xcal2 and pull your 7 digit strategy code straight from your computer. Then once they get that code, they match it to their database of 4 digit computer codes. Then send you your tune.
