Which Chip?

I haven't even taken delivery of my 98 LSC CE yet, but I'm already thinking ahead to making mods. The first thing I intend to do, besides for replacing all fluids, plugs, etc., will be to install a K&N Air Filter and some kind of chip. I have done a little preliminary research and have come across the Superchips MAX Micro Tuner and the Jet PCM. Any suggestions as to which chip or tuner is best for my Mark? What kind of HP gains can I expect from these two simple mods? Jet claims 14-16hp gains, but I don't see numbers for the Superchip tuner. By my estimates, with these two simple mods, my Mark should ring in at a little over 305 hp after the mods. Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't go with either jet or superchips.. I have had genos chip in my 93 but in my 96 I am using dennis' chip. I like them both.. however I really want to save up and get a custom dyno tune, thats the most bang for the buck. it'll be more than a regular chip tho. you really won't see crazy h.p gains with just a chip.

Will the MAF kit make a difference by itself, or do I have to get a chip for it to work right?

you need chip it for it work right. it is like with every other performace upgrade you do, you have to reflash the chip.

when im ready that where im rotting to

This statement always amazes me, you wont feel any ral hp gains with just a chip but a dyno tune is better? OK well how do you think the chips programs were originally created? On a DYNO?

The maf kit works fine without a chip, a chip will fully benifit the airflow but you can go without a chip np.

I understand what your saying but each car is different and reacts different to mods, some people can gain 10h.p per mod some may get only 5h.p. . I'd rather also be there while they tune it, to see how things work and what they are doing as opposed to just plugging in a chip. and I never said you wouldn't feel any gains... you'll def feel the chip, you probally won't get 20h.p just by adding a chip.. again all cars are different.

and I am not trying to argue with you or say your chip doesn't work. I was trying to get your chip but you didn't have my code and said it could take weeks or months to get that code.

I Put In My Maf Like 4 Months Ago And I Can Honestly Say That I Don't Feel A Difference. It Sounds Alot Meaner Though.maybe It's Just Me.

Run it at the track, 3 runs with and 3 runs without, you will see a minimum of 1 tenth.

I put my MAF in about 2 months ago, and I most deffinetly noticed a difference in the speed, especially above 3000 rpm. I honestly don't notice that much difference in sound, but then again I don't hear too much in my car besides the crazy speakers & sub I threw in there.

if your going to do the maf with the ice box i believe you need to do exhaust to because if you have more air in and it cant get out then you still have a problem and the stock exhaust sucks

If you plan on getting more mods, you should go with an SCT so you can get your chip reflashed when you add gears or converter

I have the sct pro racer package, while it is more expensive than a chip alone it's much more effective as you get to custom tailor your tune to your individual preferences.

Considering that shift points, and torque convertor lock up schedules are very subjective to "opinion and preference", the SCT PRP package makes changing/adjusting your tune "point click tune" easy!

I have had chips from many vendors, each had their own benifits and drawbacks..the SCT PRP package gave me the ability to "take things I liked" from each of the tunes..and custom create a tune for MY preferences, rather than "what someone else" thinks my car should be doing.

Feel free to PM me for details, if there is anything I can do to help.. I'd be glad to.

Tommy

An Xcal will let you adjust shift points and firmness. Not TC lockup though.

If you program the Xcxal with the SCT PRP then you make the TC lock up adjustments in the software before you push the file to the Xcal.
Then you have minor adjustments such as you mentioned on the xcal itself.

The majority of the changes are made before the Xcal is even brought into the equation.

then how come so many people complain about their chips? id never get a chip w/o it on a dyno. have read too many horror stories.

i wouldnt do the maf kit unless you plan on fabbing up some sort of box to keep hot air out... without this, i doubt you would see any track difference since the hot air is gonna just gather under your hood and get sucked in when you take off.
