what's up guys I'm actually posting this from a treo 650 so bear with me... I have another problem... a big problem....this mornin as I was leaving my house my car was actin weird I got up to the end of my hill when I let off the brakes and hit the gas the car banged into gear and took off so I figured it was nothin... then I started driving and the car would not shift out of first gear I was hittin the gas and the was not going any faster then 30 mphs and the rpms were high. immediately I shut the car off and started it up again and amazingly it was fine... what was that all about I went to the dealer and they were gonna check the tranny fluid but they said they needed a special tool to do it... can anyone give me an idea if what this is...? thanks...

Sorry guys i realize i wasnt more specific about the previous post... i was at work and had a treo 650 demo i was messing with and decided to post my topic with it.. well here it goes..

i have a 2001 Lincoln LS8 that i bought about 2 and a half weeks ago... As you read above i seem to be having a problem, now it hasnt done it since this morning and i've driven the car about 3 times since then and it hasnt done it again... When i pulled out of my driveway this morning as i got to the corner theres a stop sign and when i let of the brakes and gave it gas the car like "bucked" foward and took off, now i wasnt expecting it but the car kinda bucked the tires chirped and then it all of a suddenly stopped and drove fine up the hill. Then like i said earlier when i let off the brake the car rolled back a bit i gave it some gas and the same thing occured, but this time the car would not shift any higher then i would think 1st gear but it might be 2nd because it got up to 30 mph. I was reading all the posts on transmission problems and i have yet to read anything like this. I would have thought it was the tranny fluid so i took it straight to the dealer this mornin and had them look at it and they said they couldnt because they needed a special tool in order to check the tranny fluid. I was also reading about a relflash for the PCM??? Coul i need a reflash??? Any ideas?? Thanks guys i appreciate your help and i know i seem like a pain in the ass but the car is new to me and i'm scared that theres something wrong with the car Thanks for your help Guys and Gals... :Beer

It sounds to me like the problem is electrical (as in valve body/solenoid packs/speed sensors or your PCM). I am no expert mechanic, but it would seem if the problem was mechanical, it would not have reset itself when you turned your car off. I would suggest getting it in to the dealer to have them reflash the transmission. As for the fluid level, they should have been able to check that with no special tools.......it simply requires them to put the car on a lift and drop the fill tube on the bottom of the transmission.

If I am wrong about this, I am sure someone will correct me and point you in another direction. But, to me, if the problem was mechanical the problem would still persist now. Good luck!

Something similar happened to me in my last car (1998 Nissan Altima). It would sometimes seem as though it was slipping when it would try to go from 1st to 2nd and also sometimes in reverse. It would do it almost at random. Then as the weeks past, I would notice it happening more frequently. Sometimes I crank the car up and put it in reverse and nothing... I would rev the engine up to 4000 RPM and it would jerk violently into reverse.

Ended up taking it to a good friend who was also my mechanic. We took the tranny apart and there was a handful of metal shavings. Upon further inspection we realized that I destroyed the reverse band. Ended up getting a used tranny from a local yard.

i had a problem similar to that with my SST a few weeks ago. I shifted into third and when i tried to down shift it would go into first. then from first back to third. Very strange anyhow i just pulled over shut off my car and restarted it with no problems since.

I had the same problem in SST mode as well. Has happened about 3 or 4 times now. The dealership told me they currently are no TSBs on this and that their were no fault codes. Somewhat frustrating, however, it does reset upon restarting the car. Hopefully enough of us will complain about this that FLM will research the issue and issue a TSB.

I believe there is an additive that the dealer is supposed to add to the tranny to fix this problem. :Beer
