Driving a car through a house. Only a boy-racer could do that.

I fail to see what this has to do with why you don't drive Rice. How can you blame that accident on the car? To be honest, that particular car happens to be one of the finest handling, most powerful cars on the road right now. If anything, it should show what too much power can do in the hands of an inexperienced driver. So are you trying to say that you wouldn't drive this car because it's too powerful for you?

No. I'm saying the accelerator pedal stuck and the young einstein behind the wheel didn't know what to do. I guess I would call that a pretty serious recall defect, wouldn't you?

Ah, the OLD "my gas pedal stuck" excuse. :bsflag:
The retart admits he was going full throttle in 3rd gear, in a residential area. The car's a manual trans so simply stepping on the clutch would've stopped the whole thing. I gotta look up the specs on that car to see how fast he was going.

I'm impressed that he made it through the garage door. I wonder what his next car will be?

What??? You don't believe his 'stuck gas pedal' theory? And he puts that on the internet to boot. If I was the insurance company, I'd say pass. Fix it yourself. Forget the car. He has a $10,000 home repair bill to contend with.

How do you define rice? Is it anything Japanese? Is it just boy-racermobiles?

I've owned some Japanese products, and they were pretty good. I had a '79 and '80 RX-7 and they went like hell.

I believe we all owe the Japanese a big thank you because they set the standards for reliability that caused the American manufacturers to dramatically improve their products.

Think about the American cars of the '60s. They look good but you'll have to admit that the only thing they are good at is going real fast, in a straight line. Today's lowest priced American cars outperform the best '60s cars in many categories.

Dont laugh, I had an 80 Regal with a 454 in it, and had the linkage pop off......pulling the return spring........it was all I could do to keep the car from plowing head on into a freakin building.....because I stomped it and it broke the linkage and all....and it was heading straight for a building. Now, I was only 17 at the time.......and I did wreck the car....but not into the building, but into a curb.......did about as much damage as the building would have......just in a different manner. So, technically I have had the 'gas pedal stuck' problem......but it was prolly my fault....I KNEW that the linkage was gonna end up givin me a problem....since I kobbed it together and it had a tendacy to stick at times.....but a quick throttle stab would release it......normally. I really did not care though.....the car was SCARY fast....... :Bang

Barry's absolutely right! I really hate it when people use the term "rice" in such a way. Years ago, the term "rice" was orginally used to describe Japanese motorcycles but since then has been used by a lot of people (inaccurately I might add) to describe virtually any vehicle that has been heavily modded with accessories mainly for looks. It's actually fun to see what some people consider "rice". On another forum, we did a thread titled "What do you call Rice?" and it turned into one of the biggest threads ever. Of course it was also one of the most heated threads too. It seems there's a lot of resentment among the motoring public towards this style of car. It seems like all you need to do is put a rear spoiler on a car and there's gonna be someone that'll call it rice. I'm not sure what bothers so many people about spoilers.
But getting back to Bryan's original comment, the car in question is (was) a Subaru WRX STi. The car in the picture is un-modified and exactly as it came from the factory. It is a 300HP, AWD car that can virtually be taken from the showroom and raced as-is very successfully. That's 300HP and 300lb/ft of torque from a 2.5 liter H4! That's 120hp per liter!!!! It is one of the best examples of a production race car in the world, and certainly in this country. All that for about HALF the price of a new base Corvette (which is well-known to be the best bang for the buck American sports car). I just think that deserves some respect, don't you?

Ya dern whipper-snappers!!!

Here's what I call rice:
tnl_1843_700z_instant.jpg

Yummy!

You can put all the lipstick and makeup on it you want. It's still fugly. And it's still a box like that Uncle Ben's pictured above and still rice to me. It's a 2 door box with a spoiler. Ok, let's call it a 300 hp ricemobile. Looks like an Escort with a wing and oversized wheels. A Yugo with an aero package. A Honduh with an air grabber. Rice, rice, rice.

Let's see how many of them make it to 100,000 miles, much less 150,000 or 200,000.

Actually, Subaru's are well-known for their durability/dependability. Coming from a Lincoln owner, a shot about long-term durability means very little Bryan. Hell, the two most prevelant cars here (the MKVIII and LS) are among the LEAST reliable cars on the road!

Well first things first.
1. A WRX Sti has an MSRP of 32870
a Corvette has an MSRP of 44270 (No where near double that of an STI) and that is the new Corvette mind you. Yes yes the one with the 6 Liter 400hp LS2 engine. Well yes it doesn't have AWD but this is like comparing apples and oranges.
2. 120hp per liter is no achievement in a turbo/supercharged engine.
The honda S2000 puts out 240hp from a 2 liter engine. 120hp N/A! Thats impressive. Granted the S2000 has no torque but that is another issue.
3. We all know that the spoiler serves no purpose on that car whatsoever since it will never see speeds high enough to require that kind of downforce and that spoiler is probably not even shaped correctly to that. This is the reason so many people classify it as "rice"
4. I have utmost respect for the STI it is as you said one of the few examples of an outstanding almoust race car... but in a street friendly package. Closest competitor would be the EVO VIII which is also a very neat car. But the fact still stands that they are built on econo box chassies to save money, and thats just a fact. That is why they "only" cost $32k.
5. If you want to go fast cheap... look at the dodge neon SRT4 for roughly 20k you get 240+hp 250+ torque for 50% less than the STI.

I don't know about that. My personal experience with Lincolns dates back to 1979 when I ordered my Dad's 1st one.
Here are some that I can remember in the Lincoln line of cars in the family...
'79 Mark V...275,000 sold
'84 Town Car...161,000 sold
'88 Mark VII...167,000 sold
'90 Town Car...335,000 still running. Original engine and trans.
'93 Mark VIII...152,000 disassembled for mods.
'95 Continental...110,000 running perfect with all toys functioning
'97 Town Car...213,000 sold
'98 Mark VIII...100,000 near perfect
'00 Town Car...32,000

You can't compare Subaru's of the past to this particular car. It is well known that a stressed-out car like this one does not have a long self life. Maybe because it gets flogged heavily but I can speak from personal experience and my cars get flogged almost daily. I love the rush, whenever I can get it. So it is my opinion that Lincolns can really go the extra mile if properly maintained.

#1 You're right. I over-stated the price difference. I was used to quoting the standard WRX pricing which is closer to the point. Sorry.
#2 Actually 120 hp IS a pretty damn good number, especially from a $30K car. The S2000 you spoke of illustrates perfectly why a turbo is a much better choice for a high-performance application, especially one that will be driven on the road. Gaining high power output through high revs is nothing new but virtually nobody does it because you end up with what the S2000 has. Virtually no bottom-end power. Driveability SUCKS on that car. You have to constantly stir the trans to get any power from it and even then it's still gutless off the line.
#3 Granted, the wing is 99% for looks on that car but don't forget that's also what sells.
#4 The point about these cars being "econo-boxes" is something that presents another point to ponder. Those cars are not based on their manufacturers cheapest chassis designs, and how is that any different from the old hot-rod days when Detroit manufacturers made sports cars out of their cheaper cars? Wasn't it a good idea then? Why isn't it now?
#5 I agree the SRT4 is a great deal for the money. The only problem is that it's FWD and the others are AWD. You think that has something to do with the price difference?

Yeah, I'm sure your "personal" experience is different Bryan. But the facts still remain that the MKVIII and LS are two seriously unreliable cars with very high incidents of repairs.
just a few years ago, when I was in the livery industry, it was well-known amongst industry insiders that between the two main competitors (the Cadillac Fleetwood and the Lincoln Town Car) the lincoln rode the best but the Cadillac lasted the longest. Most livery operators that had mixed fleets routinely reported that the Lincolns started really falling apart by 150K miles while the Cadillacs seemed to be just getting broken-in by that point.
And as for the STi's durability, try to remember what kind of racing it was designed for and excels in.

Hey Kevin,

You were in the livery industry? Can you help me identify the maker of this limo?
I'm in the process of buying it.
