Will a trac loc from a 01-04 Mustang GT work on a 98 LSC

getting gears done sometime soon 4.10s and wanted to do a trac loc as well found one out of a 01 GT with 30k miles for $55. I wanted to know if this will work on my 98 LSC?

I'm pretty sure it will 28 spline axles
 
Well techincally yes but unless the side gears are machined for the IRS you will have a hell of a time getting the axles out again or you can leave the clips off but then the axles will only be retained in the housing by the fact they can only move so far because of the wheel bearing on the other side. People have done both and it works but IMHO spend a little more and get one for an IRS car.

finding one from a 99 cobra will be a PITA, the 99-04 GT trac locks are availble all day long for cheap 40-60. Let me look around,
 
Yeah they are harder to find. IIRC I got one new from Max for less then $200. But if you get a used one there is a good chance it could use a rebuild which is another $60-80. Good luck
 
new gears are less then 200 beans, y would you wanna risk putting used gears in?? unless of course your setting the rear up. but im guessing no.
 
Yes... just leave the c clips off the axles... Driller has made hundreds of passes with his car like that no problem.

is there any cons to leaving the C clips off, Im assuming you are saying I can use the Trac loc from a 01+ GT, if so that would be great. This is a DD so It will not see any track time just some fun on the street.
 
I didn't know this fact until recently but from what i have read there isn't... ask Driller he is doing it!
 
Every 89-95 T-bird Super Coupe except 94-95 with auto came with trac lock from factory ,so finding one shouldn't be a problem.BTW Fastest mark here is running non IRS trac lock , it works great and holding up fine to 1.5 60 foot times .:D
 
I know max said in a previous post, that newer trac locks come with the appropriate side gears for use in irs. So, the 2001 may work anyways.

Not true my brother had a 91 sc auto with an open rear end, Also my 93 sc had an open rear. Must yes but not all

Sure they weren't just cashed?


My 91 LSC TL worked great when I got the car but became a one wheel wonder as the miles went high.
 
I have a 92 Mustang GT trac-loc with the c-clips not on the axles, no problems at all...

Yes! Remove them!

If you look at the suspension geometry, the ONLY way there would be any fear is if you frequently 'catch air' driving like the General Lee in the Dukes of Hazard fashion. :D

If you retain the circlips in a non-IRS differential, when it comes time to pull the half-shaft/differential, you will need to remove the rear cover and somehow remove the circlips from the axle stub. Not something to look forward too.
 
I saw a thread where I think it was Kdanner who pulled an axle out of a non IRS diff... there really wasn't a c clip left...
