will cutting the mufflers off make the car sound like crap?

Ok, check this out. The direct fit kit sold on ebay for the Mark VIII, Thunderbird and Cougar is anything but direct fit. The :q:q:q:qing thing isn't even close. I spent 8 hours cutting and welding (and I have alot more respect for dudes who work at exhaust shops now) I had to extend here, shorten there, and get really creative to make it all come together. That being said:

Straight pipe, they sound like a nascar (stock cats and resonator in place) Not lincolnish at all IMO. Now, I put on a set of flowmaster 40 series mufflers, with 2.5 inch pipe back to the resonator. It sounds good outside the car, but the drone is god forsaken between 1300-2200 rpm, right in the cruising speed range. I'm going to change something to try and kill that, but take away the drone and you'd have a nice exhuast. All I have left to do is transfer my tips, and at midnight the last thing I cared about was some chrome tips:cool:

Like I said, X-pipe and gears will erease any drone. Plus you will want them anyway. The x helped a lot, and the higher cruising rpm did the rest.

lol Thats my cruising rpm when I'm almost at 100, (stock 3.07's:D ) Just curious what mufflers you tried when you said you tried them all....Stainless(several custom companies), corsa, cherry bombs (new ones) spintech? Usually when someone works at a shop and says they tried them all that equates to what they keep in stock...blowmasters, ravins, and magnablows. Need to know to see what you missed, there are plenty of quality mufflers with no drone. +1 on the x-pipes, almost mandatory on a DD, imo.

:D...I'm a exhaust welder now because the Forging Company I worked at (AMERIFORGE) was kinda far and the traffic here in Houston is bad...Now, with the same pay I'm 5 miles away instead of 50 miles...and I get to play with exhausts instead of being a Maintenance Mechanic/Welder fixing Presses, Lathes, Bullards, Forklifts, Manipulators, CNC Machines and welding brackets, Hyster arms, big ass cooling racks and bunch of other needed bullshoits

So what mufflers do you run cobra? I'm a mustang guy from the get-go. Flowmasters no cats and h pipe was life for me. But I got a lincoln, not a cobra, and I don't want it to sound like it does with the 40 series on it. (to much f'ing drone) I got the stock cats, stock resonator, then 2.5 inch duel to the flowmasters out back. I want some tone at WOT but no bull:q:q:q:q in cab at cruise. I'm not goin with those tall as gears, 3.73 would be as high as I would go (4+ is reserved for jeeps and offroad to me, i'm happy with 3.73 as I have driven all gear sets in a stang, from 2.73 to 4.88 and I don't care for the fast shift, :q:q:q:qty gas mileage, and high cruising rpms) Also, the stock resonator should handle the ability of the x pipe all things being equal

I did that to my '96 Gen1 about 6 years ago and I love it. Still has the stock resonator and stock stainless steel tips. Just welded straight pipes in the place of the mufflers. I get compliments on the sound everywhere I go.

Well I just cut the mufflers out this weekend costed me $15 to rent a sawzall and buy some blades. I don't like the sound at all it is just loud, no real nice tone to it or any substance just Loud! I kept the resonator and did not run any pipes to the bumper just cut them off as far as I could close to the muffler.

The drone is nuts on the highway I drove 150 miles right after I cut them off and damn my ears are ringing.

well atleast I know I don't wan to go this route.

Step 2:

Order some real mufflers what are my options?
I was thinking
1. supercoupe performance mufflers- heard them on youtube nice mellow tone
2. Borla or Bassani, magnaflow universal muffler what kind do I need

will removing the resonator and adding a X pipe in it's place make the car louder?

want a nice quiet cruiser with a soft mellow exhaust tone not a loud car with crazy drone... had many loud mustangs already.

and BTW the car feels like it lost 20hp, the agressive attitude is gone and it use to take off at 3k now it doesn't have that snap at 3k more linear acceleration
