Winter Wheels

How does the plasti-dip hold up during the winter through snow/ice Bull? I'm thinking of plasti-dipping mine black just for fun. Those of you who can't fit stockers anymore can probably pick up a set of cheap jag 18s like I did. Got my Cygnus's with tires for $400 local.

Dip holds up just fine to the elements. I've gone a couple of winters now with dip on wheels and lower bumper grille. You may know a lowered LS turns into a plow in the winter, so the fact that it held up on my lower grille says a lot.

I vote yay for dipping your cygnus wheels. I think theyll look much better. Heck Bring them on sunday, we can bang those out too.

Putting my winter wheels on this weekend or next... it was 38 degrees when I woke up this morning, WTF!?!?!

You free next weekend? Wifey is working all weekend... I'm more thrilled about that then this halloween party LOL

38 degrees is cold to you guys? Bunch of pansies, I tell ya...

No not too cold, but close to freezing.. can't have freezing roads with summer tires on :(

Nope unfortunately have to work next weekend. Lets see if we have the will power on sunday after the party lol

Lol Pek, we like that nice weather. For meets and such :shifty:

I hear that. I'm on borrowed time right now too. It's been snowing off and on here for the past few days, but not enough to stay on the ground. I'll have to swap them over soon too.

Yeah it's not too much of an urgent issue for you though, you could always break out bigfoot if you needed to hahahaha... I have a FWD Sonata I haven't driven in snow yet that I'm also nervous about... at least I know what the lincoln is capable of in the snow with snow tires on.

Ahhh...... About 75º today and 80ish tomorrow. Overnight it should be in the upper 50's.

Then again, premium here is about $3.90.......

The rubber compounds are different between summer/all season/winter tires, as LS4me mentioned. One thing to note as well is snow tires (well, almost all of them) are siped. This helps provide extra traction on snow. Once those sipes wear off though, there's really not much difference than an all season tire.

The compound of winter/all season/summer tires is very different. Most summer tires have high speed ratings that need to dissipate heat. All seasons have a compound that stays softer when cold. Winters are an even softer compound when cold. Winter tires will grip better when the weather starts to be around freezing on dry roads. Winter tires also have various other things to help them grip better as in more sipes. Some tires have walnut shells (Toyo) others have natural rubber, fibres and microscopic holes to pull the water off the road. Because of the softer rubber some people use bald winter tires as autocross tires.

Same wheels just swap the blizzaks on the rears

I know this is an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one for such a silly little thing. I just bought some snow tires for my 2000 LS. I found a set of 5x108 steelies on Craigslist here locally for $60 and picked them up as well. Just a word of warning, Taurus steelies, while close in offset to the lincoln wheels, do not have enough curve in the center section to clear our calipers (especially in the front). I was able to get away with a 5/16 spacer in the front and a 3/16 in the rear but I don't like using spacers at all so I might be looking at some other wheels for next winter (the black steelies do look pretty cool though, a bit like a P71 but nicer ;-) )

Last winter I picked up a set of Jaguar S-type 17" rims and had a set of narrower "minus zero" sized 215/55-17 Michelin X-ice 3 tires mounted on them. The Jaguar rims are the same size and offset as the LS rims and they fit over the 320mm Jaguar Sport front brakes too. I paid $75 each for them with shipping from a salvage yard in PA. Check on eBay for them - that's where I found these. I even bought a fifth one so that I could have a full size spare.

... However, I assume since you have a wider tire which would put more tire surface on the ground that you would be OK in the snow... I can't be sure though as I have never used a summer tire in the snow.

You want narrower tires. They have a better chance of cutting through the snow and hitting pavement, whereas wider tires are more likely to float on top. I'd trust these guys' opinions:
