Wrecked my LS

If you guys think the difference between full coverage and liability is only "a few bucks" you clearly don't live in New Jersey. I have liability on my LS, its around $400 a year, full coverage was $1,800. NOT a few bucks. NJ has the highest insurance rates, so to save that $1,400 is worth it.

Wreck an LS and find out why. This car is waaaaay too expensive to repair if you wreck it. My full coverage costs $60/month for this car. Youre crazy not to. I also have $25k appraised coverage on my Cobra and liability on my $1800 beater.

I have full coverage on my LS because I have it financed...Full coverage costs me approximately $200/month. It actually fell to $200 when a few tickets fell off. I was paying about $240/month at one point...Dont get me wrong, I absolutely understand that it is probably worth it, however it is not a matter of a few bucks more a month and I have been in a spot financially where having bare bones insurance was necessary. I also was driving a 2000 Chevy Malibu at the time, not an LS, so that is absolutely a factor as well

Also, Sorry to hear about your car mlara. It was definitely one of the nicer looking LS's here. Hopefully you figure something else out

That really sucks. I was side swiped in the summer and over 4k in damage was done to my car and it wasn't nearly as bad as this. The parts are expensive for these cars.

I carry maximum liability, medical and uninsured driver coverage but never had collision or comprehensive on any of my vehicles. My reasoning is insurance is for losses that would wreck my life, while losing a car would hurt (especially a new one) it would not bankrupt me. If the vehicle damage is my fault the repair is the cost of me being stupid, if the damage is the other drivers fault I'll collect from them (of course without coverage I need to try and collect from the other driver on my own, but so far it has worked).

Don't know what I'm saving, but in 30 years of driving I've paid to replace 3 windshields and any other damage I've either lived with (car at the end of its life that I scraped on a guard rail in a blizzard) or had the other driver pay (he hit me while the car was parked).

Not worth having collision on these older cars. Problem is, insurance will only pay book value, so if damage is more than $2000 they won`t fix it. the book value on my 2001 LS is $900. Paying the extra for collision is a waste of money. Once a vehicle is over 5 years, it may not be worth putting collision on it, unless its a expensive sports car.

Dang bud, hate to see this. I am a Lurker, but I've always been impressed with what you've done with the car, and quite frankly a little jealous I didn't think of some things first lol. If you decide to part with the busted LSE bumper, let me know. I'd consider it an honor to fix it and use it with my second Gen front fascia swap.

As some mentioned the difference between liability and full coverage for me was not just "a few bucks" more like "drive" or "cant afford to drive" being a full time student. The pains of being a younger driver and poor. Of course this was a while back, i have a decent enough job now but it just hadnt crossed my mind to change over.

I'm not going to cry over spilled milk(is that the saying? Lol). I'm moving on, BUT the good news is, for me at least, it looks like i can stay a float purchasing a "new" car and just selling the mods off my LS. So I'll be keeping the LS and fixing it up very slowly. I have the space for it so thats not an issue. My main concern will be fixing it up fast enough so no damage is done from it sitting for so long, but i'm sure theres preventative things i can do right?

Anyway, Hard to believe how much a man can grow a attached to his car. Almost 7 years with mine, i have to admit I cried...a lot. Maybe ill post a vid where u can hear me sobbing in the background lol

That is all folks, thanks again for all the input and good thoughts.

P.S. Keep an eye it for a "FOR SALE" thread from me, some mods include:
- Barcelonas
- Mclaren
- SCT tuner
- Big brakes
- Bassani exhaust
- eibachs (maybe)
- K&N intake
- maybe more

I was enjoying some exceptional back road winter driving today and thought about how I would react if I wrecked mine. I too would be devastated so don't feel bad. As far as working on it, good for you. Even at it's worst you'll increase you ability and confidence in that sort of thing. I'd also say if you cried over your car, you owe it to try and bring it back lol.

Just make sure to do it or like you said, you'll do more damage having it sit and writing off for tomorrow. I tried to explain that to my dad but now his 84 Dodge Ram, 77 Jeep J10, and 01 Chevy Van are hopeless automotive headstones.

almost made me cry seeing it wrecked lol, you definetly inspired me to get a Ls and mod it , if you do decide to sell parts I definetly want the cold air intake :)

I feel the pain. I didn't cry when I wrecked my S15, but it kinda stripped the gears in my head. That truck was my baby and I intended to drive it forever, and when it was totaled it took all the life out of my hobby. All that work I put into it, all the plans I had, all gone in 5 seconds because some stupid bitch has to decide that she's at a 4 way stop and not a 2 way stop even though her stop sign clearly stated "CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP". But, that intersection has since been changed to a 4 way stop. I guess the cops finally had enough of it and got the traffic department to make it a 4 way, the trooper who responded said he worked 5-6 accidents a month at that one intersection and it was way out in the sticks.

wow im glad your ok but man its time for a new one. start a parts tread and get enough funds to get your new car. as far as full coverage, I have it on all my cars. as most of you may remember my old 04 LS was vandalized and since the hid lights where broken the insurance paid it off. it had 149k miles and they gave me 8300 for it and I got my 06 with it. full cover all the way man.

When my LS was hit by that leaf spring, the front bumper cover, HID headlight, right front wheel and tire, and right front fender had to be replaced. Somehow the hood was missed. The cost to insurance was 3400 dollars, if I recall correctly, to have a dealer body shop install the new parts, and paint to blend which included painting the hood. I did pay a bit extra to touch some other parts up. Not too bad, considering the markup a dealer would put on new parts. Probably would have been a grand less had I not had the HID headlights.

On my son's Corolla, we did all the work ourselves, but obviously the parts wouldn't match up on price. However, I did have to have the rad support fixed, and that ran me about 100 bucks at an independent shop. I would imagine that you'd be better off with a new rad support, so I'd expect you to be looking at 300 bucks to get one installed at an independent. If you went to an independent with parts and had them do the painting, I'd take a guess at about 1500 bucks to have them install and paint, plus whatever the parts ran.

Hope some of this helps with your decision. My prices are Tulsa OK area prices on the Corolla, and Fort Smith AR prices on the Lincoln (where I was when it happened).

Im not worried about paint which i know would kill me with my paint being a tri-coat. Im not in a rush to fix so ill be sourcing parts already in my color or worst case scenario ill plasti dip the whole car.

As far as rad support i have this LS locally that i can have for $200:

If you can get that whole car for 200 I'd grab the whole car, in case the damage got into the subframe. If nothing else, you could part out what remains to help pay for repairs.

I counter your educated guess! He had the LSE Grille on, the McLaren is safely sitting in his garage :)

Yea mclaren is safe. Ill prob have a thread up this weekend.

My LSE grille as well as headlights were pulverized. Still havent seen any trace of the grille. Found a few pieces of the headlights tho.

If you're serious about putting this mofo back together I am EXCITED to begin working on it!!!! Just lemme know!

Let's all be on the look out for replacement parts, preferably in pearl white and near the NJ area!
