2000 LS V8 Overheated, (Long description)

Hello Everyone, let me start off my saying this is my first post, I subscribed to LVC a few weeks ago. Also, I started a new thread because I couldn't find anything helpful in other threads and the oned I did I bookmarked.
A little bit about me: I'm 19 years old, car enthusiast, novice mechanic. When I say novice I mean novice, I know a bit about cars but not a lot. My first car was a free 95 civic that I never drove, I sold the ugly thing, bought myself the love of my life, an 85 Corvette. 10 months later, reality set in, I had to sell it, too expensive to restore and not worth restoring. Bought a 95 Camaro. Too many problems, sold it a week later. Now I have a 2000 Lincoln LS I got from my brother before my high school graduation.

So I got my Lincoln from my brother who only had it for a few months but without problems, He even drove it to new Mexico and back to California with no problems. However, the car has had the check engine light on since I legally and officially owned it. I have a code reader, The Lincoln shows codes P0171 and P0174. My brother was told by a "mechanic" it was the maf sensor, So I replaced it and no luck. The car started making fan noises pretty much since I owned it, as if the fan was working too hard or spinning too fast, this happened only when the car was running for a few minutes. I heard it mostly when I stepped on the throttle at low speeds. Like in a stop sign or a red light, or looking for parking in a parking lot. I probably didn't hear it at high speeds because of wind noise and road noise and other cars, etc...

One day in a warm day like 85-90 degrees, the car overheated terribly, I drove from my house to my girlfriend's house (drove 2 miles) after picking her up we went to a store ( drove another 6-8 miles) from that store we drove across the street to the mall and looked for a parking space. We parked and went inside, after coming back to the Lincoln the car was incredibly hot, I blamed it on the weather, and the car had no ac, I think I need to refill it. So we just rolled our windows down. We were on our way back home but we had to stop at Mcdonald's to get her mom a burger (drove from mall to mcdonalds around 6 miles). I took the drive thru, I waited quite a while in the drive thru. once on the street, I got the the red light, I noticed smoke coming out from under the hood, I took the right lane instead and went into a gas station (not a smart move when a car might catch on fire), opened the hood and saw that the reservoir behind the front wheel was boiling the liquid, Is that the coolant? or maybe it was not boiling it might have just been spilling it. And it did spill it all. we waited for the car to cool down, bough like 4 large bottles of water and cool the car down, I set the ac to circulate from the fan to help the car cool down. I poured some of the water on the now empty reservoir. We decided to drive to my house, instead of calling her cousins tow truck. Since my house was only like half a mile away. The car made it home, I parked it and her mom came and picked her up, It was quite embarrassing since they drive an old aerostart with 600,xxx miles, and my luxurious, good looking Lincoln broke down.

Can anybody help? I really need my car soon because I have a job interview and I might start working soon.

Since that happened like 3 weeks ago I hadn't done much to the car, besides wash it, its been sitting in my garage for the past 3 weeks. SORRY FOR THE LONG THREAD, ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED.
 
First off welcome.

I will recommend that you read the sticky threads above this thread.

Every thing you have described has been covered and more.

Also what year, engine, mileage of your LS.

The codes most likely are your COPs and the over heat issue is the second common issue on the LS...you need to replace your Degas bottle with a Motorcraft replacment. You may and most likely will also have to replace most if not all the plastic cooling parts.

BTW you don't want to turn your AC on when your car is over heating...you want to turn the heater on...or the best thing to do it shut it down right away....when the temp gauge is over half way you are overheating.

Sounds like you have a LS that is showing it's age and will need a bit of TLC....there is a great group of people here...but make sure you read up and search before you post a question.
 
You'll probably not find a thread that exactly describes your situation. But you have a coolant leak somewhere, probably in the Degas bottle (the reservoir behind the front wheel you described), but possibly in the thermostat / thermostat housing or any of the plastic cooling system parts. It's impossible to tell you exactly which part(s) are guilty. They need to be inspected.

P0171 means your system is too lean,check your 02 sensor.P0174 means the same. check your 02 sensors. and if its overheating check the degas bottle( coolant reservoir) it might be leaking.
 
You'll probably not find a thread that exactly describes your situation. just like regiment said, you more than likely have a leak somewhere. i was having my car's fan spin really rapidly after driving it for a bit and i replaced the degas bottle because it was leaking and was also boiling the coolant to a point where you can hear it . i also changed the thermostat since its a fairly easy and cheap fix.the degas bottle is pretty pricey though.
 
Degas bottle. Not too terribly hard to change....... BUT........MAKE SURE YOU BLEED THE SYSTEM EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I had both p0171 and p0174
It turned out to be a vacuum leak

OHH Guys I forgot to add. The other day my brother and I put water in the degas bottle, where it leaked all the coolant. Nothing happened at first, It held fine. I even started the car and let it run for around 10 mins and little by little as the car reached temperature it leaked it, until a certain point where it just leaked it all or most of it at once. And thank you all for your replies I've been checking out the other threads and getting to the bottom of whats wrong with my car.

That means you need a new degas bottle. MAKE SURE TO BLEED THE SYSTEM CORRECTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Also from everything that has been written around here..do not buy the Dorman degas bottle.
 
Not good to be just pouring water into it either.
 
A Vaccum leak? Can you Explain more? What did you do or replace to fix it? Thanks for your reply! :drunk:
these to hoses were broken at the connection at the intake tube i just used some rtv silicone to fix them and it worked

Yea Water was not my first choice but oh well I really wasn't thinking straight. I really need my car up and running soon for work, so today I'll buy some coolant. Does anybody know what kind? Also, what brand of bottle too, I guess I'll stay away from Dorman. And I think I can do it myself, Its doesn't seem so terribly hard, Considering that on my Corvette project I did all the work on my own, and following instructions, everything went right. Also, I found a few threads here that talk about that. Once again, Thanks everyone for your help.

Motorcraft only.
I promise that you'll find that you need to replace the thermostat housing and engine fill cap at a minimum as well. You have to follow the fill and bleed procedure (linked below) exactly if you want this to work. The old cap and the housing is going to crack when you do.

Has anybody found a thread about replacing the thermostat? I cant find anything.

UPDATE: I Thought I can take on this job on my own. But I really don't want to cause any damage. I've been calling mechanics for a quote, so far for a diagnosis alone the cheapest is 75 an hour, all the way to 200. Do you guys think this is ok? Also, How much in total for the job do you guys think is a good price?

Wow 75 an hour
seems high to me
My local shop charges only 45 an hour
 
So Far All I've done is schedule an appointment to get my car diagnosed. But thanks everyone for your help and comments, This forum rules! The people are so cool and not rude and most importantly helpful.
 
Whats wrong now? My car is fixed and after two day same thing happened. Does anybody know whats causing this?
