Allison 6 -speed. can this work?

Probably not without a ton of modifications. I'd love to have a 6-speed in mine too. But if you're going to go that route, why not get a 6-speed that will just bolt up? Like one out of a Navigator or a Mustang. They've got the same bell housing bolt pattern and should hook right up. Now there will be a ton and a half of other mods that have to be done to make it work, but at least it's a bolt-in.

I would get a Gear Vendors Overdrive Unit and make my 4 speed auto an 8 speed auto :D

Be a hell of a lot less work than trying to make an Allison fit

I wanted to do a 6r80 cause it bolts up becontrols makes a
Controller I just need money and to make sure I can fit it in the tunnel

Oh I have so thought about that so many times! That would be absolutely awesome!!!

I wonder if you can get paddle shifters for the Navigator 6 speed

I hope not. I HATE flappy paddle shifters! Give me a clutch pedal and a real shifter please!

Is it highway speed your looking for? The cheapest way to keep the rpms down is a set of highway gears like 2:73 or 3:08 and you wouldn't have to spend a right nut on a trans swap! Yes, the car will be a turd off the line but you would run out of hp before gear! A viper spec t-56 would be a bit pricey but very doable!

I just think it would be nice to have more gears to distribute the power with.
I had a 98 Lexus LS400, 5-speed auto. with 290 HP that thing was a beast. Always had the right gear and always had enough power to pass anything I wanted.
Mark VIII could use and extra gear or two. 4 gears are just not doing the car justice.

get the 6a out of the 2011 mustang gt. from my understanding it will bolt right up. i dont know what you would use for a flex plate though...

why not look up those guys at mark8muscle.com that opened up earlier this year? They seem to have all their ducks in a row in this matter, and I think they can just sell the kit as well as install it. I know this is an expensive project, but if it I had the money I would order the kit and let a good shop do it and save myself the headache.

Some people are SO stuck in performance history...

I have always prefered a manual over an automatic until I started driving manumatic transmissions.

Todays paddle shifter manumatics (the technical term for such a transmission, BTW), are far superior to a manual, it's not even funny. How is this possible?

Let's analyze this:

1. Millisecond shift times. Can you shift gears in ~30ms on a manual?

2. Manumatic equipped powertrain controls automatically select the correct gear when you downshift. Personally, I'd go with what the manufacturer's powertrain engineers spent thousands of man-hours testing and playing to find the lower gear that gives you the most power at a certain speed.

3. The capability for perfect Rev-matching when you downshift. Imagine downshifting and the engine computer automatically blipping the throttle to make sure the engine RPM matches the selected downshift. No more bogging because you were 200RPM lower than what the selected gear needs and no more lunging forward because you were 200 RPM over the target RPM for the lower gear you select.

I mean, seriously, what good is a manual tranny for in a car, nowadays? Slipping the clutch so you can launch? Oh.. wait.. most cars with manumatics have the function built in.

Hell, even the likes of Lamborghini and F1 are going to all manumatics.

As far as putting an Allison 6-speed in a Mark... good luck with that.

Now, Gear Vendors would be a decent option for gaining gears on the stock Mark 4 speed tranny, had they not turned into a typical company that now sells junk.

If I ever go with a 5.9 Cummins in my F-450 I will go with a 9 speed manual, but I'm not going to be crazy about it. I would go with an automatic but I can't think of one automatic transmission that can fit under a medium-duty pick-up truck that can take 2,000+ ft lbs of torque on a daily basis.

Frogman... Youre saying that Gear Vendors products went to pot? That sucks! I added them on the the 72 Plymouth Road Runner that I had. That was 9 or so yrs ago and loved it. Their product rocked back then. Sad to hear that they went to pot.

Unfortunately, this is what I heard from several people. Of course, I can't speak from personal experience with their overdrives... I don't feel like wasting 3000+ dollars just so I can speak from experience with their product.

Yep:D

I have always prefered a manual over an automatic until I started driving manumatic transmissions.

I've driven a couple. And I prefer a real manual. But that's just me.

Todays paddle shifter manumatics (the technical term for such a transmission, BTW), are far superior to a manual, it's not even funny. How is this possible?

I don't doubt that flappy paddle shifters are superior. But that doesn't mean I have to like them. I prefer to shift my gears manually with a real shifter and a real clutch pedal. Because it's more fun. But that's just me.

Let's analyze this:

1. Millisecond shift times. Can you shift gears in ~30ms on a manual?

Nope. But I don't care. I like rowing through the gears. It's more fun.

2. Manumatic equipped powertrain controls automatically select the correct gear when you downshift. Personally, I'd go with what the manufacturer's powertrain engineers spent thousands of man-hours testing and playing to find the lower gear that gives you the most power at a certain speed.

Or you could do it the old fashioned way and use your own brain. And if you make a mistake and hit the wrong gear, so be it. Live and learn. It's more fun that way. Computers are great, but when they take the fun out of driving, I'll go with the lower tech.

This is all well and good. The tech is very impressive. But I like to shift my own gears and think for myself. If I don't perfectly match the revs, so what? It's still more fun.

I mean, seriously, what good is a manual tranny for in a car, nowadays? Slipping the clutch so you can launch? Oh.. wait.. most cars with manumatics have the function built in.

Manuals are fun. Letting the computer think for you just doesn't appeal to me. But again, that's just the way I feel about it. Your mileage may vary.

Hell, even the likes of Lamborghini and F1 are going to all manumatics.

And that's all well and good for them. In fact, most Italian supercars as well as most high-end luxury and sports cars are going to manumatics. And that's fine, since I'll never be able to afford one anyway. But I still prefer to shift my own gears. 'Cause it's more fun!:)

As far as putting an Allison 6-speed in a Mark... good luck with that.

Agreed.

Allison is a HD trans for a Pick-up truck up to a city Bus and Trash Trucks... They are a very durable tranny
LOL @ putting it in a Mark

Yeah I prefer a stick like the close ratio JDM 6 speed in my STi but it is only for fun. If I wanna go consistent and fast in the 1/4 mile then I need to go Auto.

Matter of fact if you want to win you wind up going with the most basic Auto out being the Powerglide! One planetary and then direct drive. Takes the least HP to drive and has the best Torque Converter selection period. Plus everyone uses them along with Ford and Mopar.

Sticks are fun but if ya wanna get serious go AUTO :D

Yep:D

:blah: :blah: :blah: fun :blah: :blah: :blah: Fun :blah: :blah: :blah: fun

I'm thinking you are of the philosophy that manual trannies are more fun...?

I don't have anything against manual transmissions per se. If I had my choice between a manual and an old school slushbox, I'll take the manual any day. But if it's between a manual and a manumatic... Well, I'll stick with a manumatic. I can downshift and upshift just as well as with a manual at the mere twitch of an index finger.

I'll reply to your post in more detail, but right now I are busy kicking ass at Metroid Other M. I don't play videogames much, but Metroid has alwas been a favorite of mine.

That's fine. I've got nothing against manumatics. I just don't care for them. I prefer grabbing a shifter and going at it. I prefer the tactile feel of a true straight drive to the rather sterile "flick" of an auto or manumatic. It's a matter of preference. I love shifting gears. Always have. I love feeling the shifter slip into the gates. I love feeling the cogs mesh. I love feeling the clutch engage. It's just me. Flappy paddles and "+/-" manumatics take all the fun out of driving in my opinion. And I've never raced nor have I ever been to a dragstrip. But I do enjoy spirited driving on twisty backroads. That's where a true manual really shines. And I love it. Paddles and up/down autos just don't cut it for me. But if you like them, mo par to ya!

See? And this is where I truly enjoy manumatics, in the twisties. Set that tranny to manual mode and I don't have to worry about heel toe shifting, or raising my left foot to depress the clutch while coming (or going into) a right turn, in order to select a different gear.

I can just twitch my index fingers as I'm coming out of the turn and mash the go-go pedal without having to take my hands off the steering wheel. Accelerating on a straight with a latte in one hand is one thing. Driving through the twisties with one hand... not so much.

But as you said, it's a matter of preference.
