I have a 01 LS Sprot w/~ 98k on it. Recently replaced all the plugs, coils, etc.

Occassionally I've had the check engine light on my car come on. I had associated this with the gasoline being used (on the occassions it occured I had just filled up the car. Adding STP Injector cleaner resolved the issue). Per recommendations from this forum I brought the car to the dealer to check out the code. What came back was "Road tested self tested P0133 P0735 Daig P0133 Bank 1 Up stream EGO Sensor slow respone needs new EGO" When I asked how much it would be to replace the oxygen sensor the said $400. Now it's been a while since I replaced an O2 sensor but the $400 seemed a little bit too much.

Is there anyone who can offer advice on the cost on a new sensor and the difficulty to replace an new sensor?

Also, coincidently, as I was bring in the car to be checked, the "check transimmision" light came on for the first time ever. So I had them check that. The diagnosis there was " DIAG P0735 Trans5 Gear Code Trans will need to be overhauled in the future'.

Any advise/experience on that one?

BTW, to had the dianosis performed costs $137.72...hence my skeptisim on "dealer repair" shops.

I think this is a great forum with some pretty good mechanic types. Any advice would be apprecited.

the O2 sensors are not too bad to change - the top ones are in a really cramped area. You'll need the special O2 tools (socket with a place for the pigtail to come out) and some PB Blaster to loosen them first.

that tranny diagnosis may be BS (may not be). there have been a few of us here that had tranny failures and nobody's was accompanied by a check tranny message. Folks that got check tranny messages/codes have had solenoid packs replaced.

Thanks Quik...I'm not familar with PB Blaster. Available at Nappa (or other fine autopart stores)?

I have a service manual comming in a few days. i'll check with that. Any suggestions on where to get the sensors? Also, can I assume that "BANK 1 UPSTREAM" refers to a specific sensor?

bank 1 upstream will be the front sensor (closest to engine) on the 1st bank. I "BELIEVE" bank one is pass side but you'll need to wait for someone else to chime in.

yep - I get mine from AutoZone. It's like WD40 on steroids and it does not contain things that will containment the O2 sensor (like silicon)

Just an update....got the "Check Transmission" error again (actually everytime I drive now). Leaving to have a real Tranny place check out the probem. I let everyone know what they find....

Update on the tranny issue. Dealer was full of #$%@#. Brought to a great tranny shop who just replaced the solenoid packs and the problem was fixed for a lot cheaper than what the dealer wanted. Beaups, you hit the nail on the head.

For what it's worth from a diagnostic perspective: in my case the check tranny warning came on after 11 miles of driving. OBD codes were many, but the most important one related to the solenoid packs.

Thanks again.
