It's an 02 V8 with almost 130,000 on the odo. I've had it since 35000 and take good care of her; no racing or unnecessary wot. Noticed a puff of smoking out of the tailpipe yesterday morning right after I cranked it. No big deal I thought. Oil was maybe a quart low; decided to go ahead and change the oil.

Changed oil yesterday afternoon, had the mechanic do it - Mobil1 5-20 syn, filter, all that happy stuff. Started noticing a lot of smoking coming out of those tailpipes about 4 seconds after the engine turns over and starts. Blows smoke for a few seconds, then dissipates. Not blue, black, or steam, but grey. Smells like burnt oil. Fills up a good area behind the car.

Romped on it later that evening, thinking maybe she just needed a good blowing out, and belched smoked out the ass end and got a bad bad knock out of the passenger side. Half throttle later did the same thing. No check engine light.

Only blows smoke after it's been sitting for 30 minutes or so, the longer it sits, the more smoke. As of today, its been blowing smoke for up to 15-20 seconds after I start it. It runs and drives fine, it doesn't seem to miss once it gets past its initial hiccups, I can get down on it and it seems to run fine with no knocking. I can crank the car and rev it up to the limiter all day long without knocking, just under drive load it will miss sometimes.

All coils have been replaced, as well as, obviously, the valve cover gaskets.... probably about 8-10 months ago. No sign of oil leaking under the hood or under the car. Absolutely no check engine light at any time. Put my ear to both sides of the block and don't hear any pinging, knocking, or ticking, even under revs, from the engine. Oil level is fine. Car is not overheating. Does not stutter or lose power or shudder or any of the other weird things these cars do on occasion.

Somebody please help me figure out what the f*ck I'm dealing with here.

ring or valve seals. My truck has had a bad vavle seal for the last 130000 miles. just smokes on start up and have to change that plug every 20000 miles. besides that it's fine. I would suggest moving to a 5w or 10w 30. skip the synthetic. When you shut it off the oil runs down the valve seal into the cylinder and puddles their. If it smokes when you start it and when you get on it I would think it might be a ring going.

Seems to me it might be cheaper to either replace the engine or sell it and buy another LS than to replace rings or valve seals... particularly rings.. you think?

It is not uncommon to have to switch to a heavier weight oil to solve issues like this with higher mileage engines. 5w-20 is very thin, not to mention you are running the synthetic. As mileage increases, wear on parts increases and gaps open. Some 5w-30 or 10w-30 could easily solve the smoking and keep the engine running strong for many miles to come.

Valve seals wouldn't be too hard to replace, you don't need to pull the heads or anything, but the camshafts will have to be removed to get the springs off. But its probably more of a pain than its worth just to get it to stop smoking.

Rings are a little more involved, and without experience you can mess that up pretty quick. And taking it to a shop for a re-ring is gonna be $$$$.

Wow - thanks for the input... the heavier weight oil didn't cross my mind. I had an 88 Saleen convertible for years and years, had 40,000 when I bought it and had 317,000 when it was stolen a couple years back. Original engine, ran like a top, and I ran synthetic in it the entire 300,000 give or take miles that I had it. But I ran 20-50. Didn't smoke, knock, ping, or anything. You think 20-50 is too heavy for the LS? And how about the sudden onset.. I always thought valve seal (s) were more of a slow issue to show up.

have the heads pulled and have new valveguides and seals installed, oversized of course, i would bet my LR wheel that is the prob. running thick oil will not help the situation, that would only put stress on the oil pump, and make it harder for the cams to get oil as quick as they need it. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

well folks... we have dissension in the ranks... who else doesn't think heavier oil will solve the problem?

Well, it is your car, your time, your money, and your headache to do what you want with. I just know if I was in that situation, I would try the 20 minute and $20 solution and put some 10w-30 in there before spending the time to order parts and pay someone easily over a thousand to fix it or spend the hours of labor on fixing it myself. Sometimes there is more than just one solution to a problem and when faced with simply changing the oil to see if the problem is fixed/reduced or riping into the engine for hours and hours, well I'd pick the first option before trying the second.

If its just at start up, don't worry about it. just go with the w30. here's a video of my truck exhaust, cold start 3 days sitting. grey smoke at first then goes away. Bought this truck new and parked it for a year (18000 miles)when I was in korea. When I came back the back cylinder valve seal had dryed out. So now it smokes at start up. Has 169000 on it. People say drive it like you stole it. I drive it like I ran a cop over with it. That truck spends more time redlined and sideways then most ricers do. Broke alot of mechenical stuff, never a engine issue once. Valve seal is not a big deal.

And if it makes ya feel any better I run 5-20 in my lincoln in the winter and 10-30 in the summer.
