FINALLY... new sub.

Yea a single will work fine. I have a 12 in a large box with a 4" aero. No port noise.

Aeros FTW.

And no it will not have to be very long at all. In fact it will be fairly short, if you go by the specs i mentioned above. All pending on what volume you build to and what tune you desire.

Nice sub!! people are going to hear you coming from a mile away :D

So I think i'm going to build the enclosure from Baltic birch plywood. After doing some reading it sounds like a better option. I hate predrilling mdf, and hate how it doesn't hold screws well, and breaks easily. Plus, the plywood is way lighter.

Where did you arrive at 2.5 cubes, Andy? Just wondering. I want to make it the full width between the wheel wells, and as tall as I can. Gonna start playing around with dimensions, and wondering if that's the number to shoot for with this sub.

Usually subs come with a spec sheet that includes optimum box volume for enclosed or ported boxes. You should at least be able to find it online.

They normally give a suggested volume. It's not always optimal volume.

Good point. Like most products things can be tweaked to make it better. I'm sure you won't have any trouble since you are familiar with cabinetry and you can always find an online calculator where you can punch in all of your subs stats to get box volume and port size.

yea they dont really give a range of volume on the website, just 1.5 so thats probably the minimum. i think that anything between 2-2.5 should yield good results, you can always contact them to see what the real optimum size is (they can probably help you with port length as well), some subs play very well in a wide range of sizes, some are often very picky when it comes to the volume of the air space. also when running that much power, its usually a good ideal to be a little over the minimum size.

Nice Sub! You know, between the weight of the sub / box / amp and your Fondmetals, your going to need to add supercharger just to get that beast off the line :p

Yeah I've pretty much given up on fast with this car.

I like a big box for my subs, I always build on the larger side of the suggestion specs and it has turned out great every time. You have to account for the sub displacing space, as well as the port. Bigger is better!

Should be up and running in a couple weeks. May not have it carpeted yet though.

These are good subs...very similar to the auidoques that i run.

I also hear they need a break in time. Anyone able to shed some light on how to properly do this so I don't burn it up?

dont play them real loud at all for a little while, and over time (at least two weeks or more) slowly give it a little more power.

the hardest part is not trying to show off to friends right away, this is where ive seen most people over do it right at the beginning

Same with any speaker. Play it soft and gradually (we're talking hours/days, not minutes) ramp up the volume.

Thanks guys. Just didn't know if I had to do something as extreme as wiring it to a 4 ohm load for a couple weeks to not push as much power to it. I'll just keep the sub setting low for now (well, after I build a box and install it).

The audio shop i have used for previous cars has always said to listen at low-mid volumes for at least 15 hours. Im not audio expert but i have always followed that rule and have never had any problems with my past equipment.

So the weights on the website are a little off. Website says the lvl 4 is 28 pounds. I just put mine on the scale. It weighed 37.6 pounds.

You were looking @ the magnet weight. The site lists ~34lbs total. I bet your scale is a tad off and/or their weight is slightly off as well.

Either way, 30+ pounds for a woofer is well into the serious business realm.

So when is the box construction beginning?

Waiting for a sheet of plywood. Local lumber yard wants 70 for a 3/4. Birch. My custom cabinet line is gonna hook me up with an 11 ply 3/4 birch. Just waiting for the price.

Yea birch is awesome... MDF dust is insane and very heavy.. lol

Lucky you got the hookups.

I don't have any upgraded electrical other than the yellow top. I'm not a fan of extra batteries/caps. I just don't know if I want to upgrade the alt in a vehicle with 157000 on it. I kind of see how a cap would benefit, but can't help but think it's only going to put extra strain on the electrical system.

As far as the hookups, we'll see how good it is when he hits me with the price tomorrow.
