Fml...

Good news: Passed smog, with a little coercion from me to the smog tech "Come on, I'm in the navy, I really got screwed when I bought it, I'm doing all the work myself, I won't tell on you, I promise, blah, blah, blah..." He passed me. Finally.

Bad news. Car overheated today. :q:q:q:q!!!!!!!!!!! WTF, MAN?!?!?!?!? Reservoir was still full, coolant was still cold. Gonna replace the thermostat and maybe try to rig some hose from the broken plastic piece to the degas.

I hate this :q:q:q:qing car.

Dude, where are you? I'm in San Marcos and an ex-swabby. Maybe I can help........

Ahhhhh.... The memories...... I spent 4 years on the Denver (LPD-9)..... Nothing like parking at the south end of the base.

Anyho.... Want to come over and we'll take a look?

Not sure if I wanna drive it if it's gonna keep overheating... If I can get it to the 15, and there's no traffic, doing 65 might keep the engine cool enough to drive, but my friend has a garage in Serra Mesa, which is only like 5 miles from where it's at. I'll pm you my number.

Sounds like there's air in the system.

Generally speaking, going faster helps you when you have a fan problem. It's less likely to help you when you have a coolant problem. Getting it towed might be wise. It would be cheaper than any potential damage from overheating.

This does sound like air in the system, you sure you got all the air out? I replaced my thermostat when I replaced my degas bottle, don't know it it made any difference.

Classic trapped air. Did you bleed coolant at the purge point near the brake booster? That broken piece is keeping normal degas, which runs continuously through that hose barb that broke through the throttle body and into the degas bottle, from taking place, so your static degas air purge has to be perfect or else. I'm not sure what to tell you, besides that a new piece is about your only hope, all $200 of it new, or a used one. With fatigue on such a part, a used one is a risk. If you had a couple of weeks, I would ship you mine when I take it off intact, but the rubber to plastic crimp leaks a tiny amount, which is why I am changing mine in the first place. It's not possible to take my good parts off and transfer them to your hose, the complete assembly has to be dropped in intact. I'd say to try a really good purge by hand on a cold engine and hope for the best. If your hoses stay cold going to the heater though, when you try it again, don't keep it running. Aluminum engines don't overheat gracefully. Usually.
