fuel pump issue

does anyone know why im getting the fuel sender open message on the display? oh and the gauge completely drops to empty when this happens.

It sounds like the wire that sends the level signal back to the dash is loose or damaged....?

That Micah, or the electrical connection at at the tank has been damaged/disconnected.

Since the hoses were messed up, that's where I'd start.

im seriously thinking about cutting the ****....my back is torn to hell from laying on the floor my whole body is aching....but id do it much faster now that i know i dont have to bring down the exhaust.

i had to cut the main black plastic fuel line b/c it kept on bending at the tips and fuel wasnt going thru so i had to cut it and i used the ends and a piece of rubber hose but now i find out that the rubber hose is no good that itll melt in a few weeks...so im stuck and the connecter is probably bad from me screwing with the **** down there.

As long as you use Fuel Grade hoses

+1. That's a serious MUST

good news i found a donnor car in west palm beach so ill be getting the fuel lines from that car.

Damn dude... Wish I had the time to lend you a hand like I always do. I think this is the 1st project in a long time that I'm not there giving you a hand. As you know, my cousin has yet to find a good car & as you also know he's still driving my truck until he buys a car. I need to find him a good solid car ASAP. I put about 640 miles on the prairie tan last week while on vacation which is fine because it was planned but I don't want to continue using it as my daily driver. I've been going everywhere with him lookin at cars. Seems 8 out of 10 cars being sold on Craigslist are either flip cars or ppl running dealers from their damn houses with 4,5 cars at a time. Hard to find a good 1 or 2 owner car. Anyway, keep me posted on your progress.

sure will dude ill be getting those hoses sometime this week and then ill be dropping the tank again...ill be putting those hoses in to see if the message on the display goes away.

Uhhh.. how long did you crank it before you decided it wouldn't fire up? Hoping you kept in mind that the fuel lines were probably empty, it could take as much as 20-30 seconds of cranking to get the fuel back up to the rails and pressurized

from a base 97 yeah in lake worth why? were you the one that pulled the engine on it? im thinking about taking friday off and going up there to get the lines....i need the lines from the fuel filter to the sending unit. Then im taking it to my mechanic so that he can install them.

mine left me stranded today, I'm yet to begin troubleshooting..
You can bridge the wires at FPDM plug to test the pump. No need to replace the unit only to find out it's something else.
can i also run this test on my '96?

per post #38, Cobrastar LS8, can anyone else confirm this Airtex for a 2001 Focus SVT is a viable replacement for my '96? Autozone part # E2448..another post said it's made by Walboro for Airtex

Damn Mark VIII's. They will be the death of us.
+1...I'm seriously thinking about scrapping my heap(s).....a buttload of extra parts as well...probably not, the gf won't come back now...time to drop a tank...or cut the backseat floor?

its really not that hard to drop the tank....now that i did it ones next time (Sat) will be a piece of cake....lift the car by the passenger side rear and put a car stand and take the jack out. Get underneath the drivers side and unscrew the gas tank strap with the jack under it ones you take off the strap the gas tank will drop on the exhaust. then unscrew the passenger side gas tank strap and the gas tank will drop just enough for you to work on the lines.

i wouldnt cut the floor bc the sender unit lines are right underneath and you can risk cutting something that you dont want to do.

Just be glad its not an X-type...

Hahaha

the gas gauge issue it now fixed.....it was the floater that was getting stuck. When the fuel sender is put inside the tank housing you have to center it. If not the floater will get stuck and you'll get the fuel sender open message on the display.
