Almost forgot about this. Typed it up over a week ago. Telco,,, it's the reason you got 2 thank yous on 2 differenty posts.
Telco said in post #63... "And yes, when minimum wage goes up, everything else does too. As I said, when it's a government mandate it becomes a fixed cost for all businesses, which means it's a safe price increase. Also remember that an employee's pay is not an employee's cost. An employer must pay not only the salary, but also various taxes that the employee never sees. Pay a person 10 bucks an hour, the actual cost is more like 14 or 15 bucks. Make it 15 an hour, and the employee costs more like 20 to 22 an hour. I don't know the exact amount, but I do know that it's measured as a percentage and not a fixed rate."
Telco,
In response to post #63,,, and your recent post...
I just spent over 2 hours talking to my high school buddy that went into "finance" and works for the small family business. Lifetime of memories with him. He showed me what you were talking about with the increase across the board. FICA tax, Unemployment tax, Workers compensation tax... and more. But he also said it depends on how much of it is used,,, and that employers do get a credit for unused portions. Now it makes sense to me why unemployment extentions were granted to a third tier a few years ago, (by the federal government). Employers had no funds to pay to into unemployment,,, because no one was working. You get a thank you on post #63.
My buddy and I talked alot about the economy... and he did agree with me,,, that todays dollar doesn't go as far as it did in the 80's. He went further back. His dad was a builder, (houses), for several decades. In the late 60's a 1300 sq ft brick home on a decent sized lot sold for $13,000. Nowadays,,, a non brick version of the same home is roughly $150,000+.
This buddy of mine has a retired school teacher, (in her '60s) as an employee. She said she couldn't understand why people couldn't make it in todays world. My buddy did some basic math with her,,, and pointed out that as a school teacher today... she would have to make $125,000 in todays dollars,,, to equal what she made 40 years ago. Isn't this about what college teachers are making now??? So it seems that to teach an education of 40 years ago,,, equals about the same amount of pay of high school teachers 40 years ago... but is being taught through 4 years of college. Again... the "dumbing down of America.
Now we have common core... and kids doing addition and subtraction starting from the left to the right... instead of right to left,,, and completely ingnoring the remainder. Extra steps... just to get to the same results, (almost).
One of the customers of the business my buddy works for,,, used to be OHIO ART. Remember the Etch-A-Sketch??? Made in Ohio for decades. My buddy watched the demise of OHIO ART,,, as Wally World dictated the price they would pay,,, until production of the Etch-A Sketch moved production overseas to China. Now Ohio Art is nothing more than a lithograph company... doing t-shirts and bumper stickers.
Other things my buddy talked about... He did agree that to be comperable with 1980's minimum wage,,, todays minimum wage should be about $15/hr,,, but that won't fix things. He said that what any country needs to survive,,, is wealth based manufacturing... and that is provided by the manufacturing or mining industry. He said that good industry creates good profit margins,,, and that the best profit margins are made by companies that "make" something. America is no longer a major manufacturing country. We are service based. My buddy says that America cannot survive by saying, "May I take your order please". I forgot to tell him about the "cat-in-the-box" order screens. He'd be surprised... but not shocked.
This country is slowly moving to a computer oriented service industry. What happens when the day comes where no checkout tellers are required,,, because computers have completely replaced those jobs? Then we will have no manufacturing,,, or service related jobs!!! Who will be working then??? Keep on using those instant checkout lanes,,, and scanning your card at the pump. When you walk in the store,,, you will hear nothing but an echo when you say, "Hello?"
We need to stand up for all American jobs,,, and let the political powere that be, (whichever party),,, know that enough is enough!!!! We as Americans,,, need to let the government know that we are tired of our jobs being sold off to other countries... and that we want to have the pride of making our own products... and want to have a job that will support our families!!! If we don't do this NOW... we are F - ed permanently!!!
Don't get me started on ObamaCare!!! I already said that is costing this country more money that it should. Congressman Bob Latta is already working on repealing that with the help of others. Socialism will not save this country... but in fact will drive it to it's grave!!! My buddy agrees on this also. Telco... you get a second thank you.
