is this high enough for getting the engine out from the bottom, with the k-member? geno? anyone? I'm not sure how much I need to raise it, anymore I don';t think I';d feel safe under.

I assume the wheels in the back are 'blocked' at a minimum. I would also put in a fail safe (as in other stands, jack, etc. in case one of those in front decide to creep and collapse (you'll probably be doing some jostling). As far as height, measure the distance from the kmember on down and somebody might be able to pipe in if that is enough.

It DOESNT have to. I have done plenty out of the top.AS long as the trann is off it comes right out the top.

I have done my 2 on my own personal car and enjoyed taking them out through the top. I have done them both ways at about the same time frame.

Hey Geno if you ever get bored with your blown 4.6 out of your car and feel like tossing in another engine i'll be more then happy to take that other one off your hands :waving:

I put the engine in my 94 in from the top. that was with the transmission connected also. I took EVERYTHING offof the back of the engine bay, all the way down to the wiper motor. It does'nt take long to put it all back on, and I don't have to be under a 2 ton car 2 feet in the air.

I'll never take one out of the bottom, unless I have a twin post lift.

Mike

on the last few years on the f-bodys (i think 97-02) you have to go out the bottom. unbolt the cross member and lower the whole engine.

i have around f-body guys to much.....sheesh.

I'm pretty sure I've seen people pull em out from the top. I'm not quite sure if I remember right, so Ill have to check. I'll get back to ya.

I've pulled LT1's out from the top(and bottom for that matter), I don't see why the LS would be any different. Like I said, I'll get back to ya. Mike

yea I was thinking last night, that cars pretty high up to be working under the bottom. but I am going to be putting headers on so Idk if its possible to put them in from the top eaisly. there looks to be enough room to put the headers on and then throw the engine in, yet I heard you can only have 1 on?

I just got back from AZ were a helped my buddy pull his moter out the top of a 2002 Z28 :bsflag:

The part that will hurt you is the wheels/tires. if you can find a way to remove them, and cradle the K-member when it drops, you should be better off. But if you can, try to leave the suspension attached to the K-member...it will make it easier(less work) when you're done. I'd remove the wheels, and when you drop the K-member, have a dolly, or something to cradle it on(to roll it out) without mashing the oil pan. Then you have mobility. of course, you'll have control arms and spindles hanging off the k-member, but that's one less thing you need to 're-install' when the motor's ready to go back in.

BTW, we dropped motor AND trans...just leave the tranny cross-member attached. makes installation much easier.

I have done it both ways. It is easier out the bottom, but requires more 'clearence'. I would try to get the car up higher, but if you can, remove the intake first, then you should have enough room at the position it sits now.

Coming out the top is easy, but requires more work, and some more finesse.

And proof i took one out the top, here's an empty engine bay for ya!

I have all of the tires off, I just threw them back just in case the car fell opr anything. I already took out the driveshaft and the car is ready to be dropped with the trans attachted but once I got the car up that high I had doubts.

I bought a bike lift that I thought would make it eaiser to lower and roll out the k-member but that is a few inches high itself.. and if I just used a dolly how would I re-raise the motor? I also concerned about the engine hoist when the motors weight is on it, it may move or something and knock into the car. like I kinda went to all the work to take it out from the bottom so I should do it, but like I said I sorta have doubts.

I helped a buddy do it on his Cobra and he insisted upon doing it with the car level. I don't know why. Maybe it's cause always uses a lift. But, I agree with BlackIce.

Just a couple of questions and a favor.

How tall are those jack stands 18" / 24"? Why did you take off your front grill and bumper, I understand the hood but not the grill and bumper? is it a "requirement" for a k-member drop? did you write down atleast what you done so far? Plan to make a step-by-step guide for us gimps that may attempt this later on?

well the bumper did not have to come off. but I wanted to re-mount my tranny cooler which was laying on the bumper. I don't have a step-by step but I will when its done write some.

watch the steering coupler shaft near the driver's side exhaust manifold. take a good look at it now. it WILL mess with you. Also, plan to destroy your egr tube...either that or spray the hell out of it now with PB Blaster, and let it soak. I think you're ready to drop...if you have 2 friends, borrow them. Their eyeballs will be invaluable as you lower that beast of a motor.

If you have an engine hoist, it will make it easier... you can lower the motor/k-member with the hoist, onto a dolly, or that bike jack. Just keep an eye on all the a/c lines on the passenger side rear of the motor, as well as the main wiring harness, and o2 sensor wires, tranny lines, etc. Its like you need 8 hands to get all the junk to clear as it drops.

good luck...not as bad as it appears.

to answer my own question... HELL NO THE CAR WASN'T HIGH ENOUGH.. trying to get it higher.. still needs a few more inches.. this car sucks

I told you to measure from the k-member to the ground.

You could always take the lift and lift up the front end of the car and then slide the motor out.
