Alright, so here's everything in a nutshell: 185k miles, the entire cooling system has been replaced, save for the degas bottle and the retarded heater hose that runs under the intake manifold (Can't even find a replacement for it anywhere), all plugs/coils done , MAF sensor and MAP cleaned, fuel system cleaning done (Intake cleaner + tank additive), new fuel filter, K&N typhoon intake installed (stock intake PCV hose fitting cracked) and the exhaust is just 2.5" piping from the cats back, resonators and mufflers deleted, only thing left is that stupid looking stock X-pipe.

Now, i've also replaced all o2 sensors, however for the last 3 months I consistently get the same code, p2195 (o2 sensor stuck lean).

HOWEVER, it also sometimes spits out p2195 and p2197 (o2 sensor stuck rich). Along with this, it rarely misfires (just a split second, 1-****-up kinda misfire) and sometimes get sputtering for a split second when leaving a dead stop. If it ever idles rough, it's for 15 seconds max and then goes back to normal. the o2 sensor that's tripping a code all the time is a Bosch sensor, "direct fit" and says it's heated, however the tip looks WAY different from OEM, Denso and UltraPower replacements. They all have a vented, cylindrical tip while the Bosch has the weird, slotted phallic sensor tip. (like so: http://www.magnumtuning.com/carperformance/images/ox_big.jpg) I also replaced the sensor under warranty, in case it was fowled or just defective. of course, the weird looking tip leads me to believe Bosch is selling a product that barely works and I got screwed, however I'm hoping someone else who uses/has used one will chime in on that.

I have been thinking maybe the timing chain tensioners are donezo, which im hoping isnt the case, or POSSIBLY, the car needs at least an SCT flash tune done to it to compensate for the open intake and exhaust.

In addition, the PCV hose fitting (where it plugs into the driver's side valve cover) cracked when installing the new CAI, I did epoxy it back together back then and the PCV hose is on there -real- tight, so I doubt that's causing a vacuum leak, though it's possible.

And if anyone's removed the PCV hose and replaced it with two of those miniature air filters, please let me know if that works! Anyways, any input on what's causing this stuttering/misfiring or atleast where else I should start looking, would be MUCH appreciated because otherwise I'm tackling this car with amateur knowledge levels and confidence of a professional (not always a good thing) with another gearhead. Thank you in advance, those who will reply :D

were the coils OEM motorcraft? did you gap the plugs when you put them in or just assume it was all good?

if there is a "NO" for one of the answers, start over again.

also, you keep having a problem with the one 02 senson that looks nothing like the others... (not saying that its definitely your problem, but I think you already know whats up)

It might be nice to know the year and engine...

nope, its an LS... it needs new coils and plugs long before needing to know anything about the car!!!

Agreed, but it might would help to answer about the timing tensioners and O2 sensors.

Coils may not have been Motorcraft, they were purchased from Oreilly. All plugs/coils were done by the previous owner. Judging by the top of them however, they look like Bosch. Hopefully not BWD. I have not checked spark plug gaps. Last time I did plugs on my truck however, I tightened til resistance was met (lightly tightened, not a strong-arming-idiot) and then backed out maybe 1/8 of a turn. Is that procedure wrong? Thanks for the quick reply.

Edit: 2003 3.9 v8 sport. Sorry, was in a frenzy and forgot to include that  I'm an idiot, I know.

I heard somewhere else on here the first gen timing system was a lot more prone to snapping. Dunno if that has anything to do with VVT being in gen2 and not gen1 or not.

I'm subscribing because I'm literally about to head down the same effing road.

Here's to hoping we help you figure something out too, Kid_Lyrics. If the car wasnt so damn pretty and unique I woulda sold it when I saw the P/S line leaking too. Hahaha

And now people know why I can't get rid of it just yet.

I've gotta fix her!. She will run perfect when I'm done. It's a damn good looking car.

Not to mention, that sunroof and leather everything is spoiling me from my cloth seats of my old Chargers lol

Not nearly as many issues, but waay more luxurious inside.

Oh believe me I know the feeling. My first vehicle was an '01 ram 1500 5.2 laramie, single cab, shortbed, 2wd, manual locks/windows/mirrors, barebone everything work truck. Installed a great audio system and that's about the best i had lol. Went from that to power everything, remote window opening, automatic lights, all leather with no wood grain...Yeah, it's exactly why I can't let go of it either lol. the 10/10 interior doesn't help either (Except the passenger seat backing (plastic on the back) is hanging..Still working on that)

It's not because of the VCT, it's because they changed the design of the timing chain tensioners and the oiling system for the chains, I have yet to hear of a gen II (2003-2006) V8 with timing chain problems. I think you can cross that one off your list of worries. I have heard bad things about Bosch O2 sensors for the LS. Of course, you should clear up the coil/plug problems first.

Thanks for the input on the timing chain and Bosch sensors. Confirmed my true feelings of the two, just wasn't sure. However today I popped the LH&RH coil covers, no oil anywhere, plugs werent gapped properly but that adjustment didnt change anything, now I can see how idiot-proof spark plugs are.

Little off topic, but anyone have good experience with rebuilding the 5R55S with the servo pin repair kit from Ebay?

Okay, so I know it's been a while but I got around to replacing the o2 sensor with a Denso, and got a United Ignition coilpack off Rockauto to replace that last OEM coil sitting on cyl 8. It runs smoother now for sure, and the misfiring upon acceleration is gone. However, I still get the rough idle and occasional sputtering upon take off. I've been wondering, my exhaust is straightpiped 2.5" with cats no mufflers or resonators, but stock X-pipe is still there. ive noticed my low end torque is pretty gone, but as soon as I hit 4k it pulls harder than ever. Think a tune could solve this?

Wow, either no one listens or no one believes. This probably won't end well.

Totally open system bad for low end. There was never a stock "X" pipe... There was an "H" pipe...

Well it's an X-over pipe, as in "last night, I had the X-over so she could pick up the rest of her crap and move out". Antman even said she was stupid looking.

I appreciate the input. Sorry for my absence. I chose not to buy the Motorcraft because i dont have good experiences with motorcraft parts. Theyre usually pretty shoddy. I did cheap out a little but the coil pack had good ratings and felt more solid than the motorcrafts. Still, low end misfiring is still occuring. No CEL. At this point im almost certain a tune would fix it.

Well, I said it probably wouldn't end well, and here we are...

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink it.

Don't you pay any of these guys any attention, you just go right ahead and fix that with a tune!
Fixing misfires with a tune, now why didn't I think of this? All this money wasted on coils, rats!

Did you know for the price of a programmer and tune, you could get 8 brand new OEM Motorcraft coils?

Anxious to know how a coil pack felt more solid. Do we squeeze it somehow?

That and/or the magic drive cycle maybe?

Antman, please have a read here and realize it's not just related to the Lincoln LS, all over Ford planet people stay away from crap no name brand coils for a very good reason.

If you will, at your leisure ... Do yourself a favor and steer clear of China coils

Now ... oddly enough the Motorcraft OEM coils DG529's are in fact also built in China. Woohoo let's all dance around the Christmas tree!!!

Trust us when we say, go with the OEM Motorcraft coils. Seriously ... and you need Qty 8 not 1 here and another later. All 8 OEM with all new NGK correctly gapped plugs.

Gotta pay to play, no cheddar, no play! No tune is going to fix your misfire, I was being sarcastic.

Ensure you have no vacuum leaks after MAF. Clean fuel filter and breather element. Clean gas, fresh coils and plugs = play time!

(cheddar = $$$)

Antman, if you really don't like Motorcraft, you can pick up a set of coils for a Mustang. Since they are better supported than the LS, they are a lot more common and it's possible to get a quality aftermarket part. If you do a search on the board for Accel coils (someone correct me if the brand is wrong) you will see what year Mustang coils to get and what needs to be done for the conversion. It does require a bit of rewiring but you get a much more robust part.
