Just changed my upper chain tensioners

Even if you are replacing all of the chains, guides, and tensioners you don't need those special expensive tools. I have 20,000miles since I replaced just the tensioners and it's still running like a champ.

did you guys replace the tensioners on the top (intake cam to exhaust cam tensioner) or another set somewhere else?

sorry, yes i did... Im just curious if theres another chain tensioner i need to be worried about... sounds like what you did might fix my problem... just making sure

Thanks again for the info.. I'll def give you a call if we run into anything...

You bet. Also to add I have a real good friend that owns a mechanic shop here in town that i ended up going to for advice and he concurred that the upper tensioners are a typical problem area in this car. Of course he recommended to replace all of the timing components chains, guides, tensioner, water pump etc. but agreed that in most cases doing both upper secondaries will get you by and remove any noises or concerns. He will not just do the tensioners, if a customer brings a Lincoln ls to him with classic signs of a bad secondary tensioner he will quote the customer for the full Monty. He said as a shop doing just the secondaries is a liability to him that said even as a friend of his I was on my own. when I took my car to him he was in no doubt my passenger side tensioner was toast.

is there a quick way to tell which bank it is if the car doesn't run??? i hate to get into the drivers side if i dont have too... compression test i'd imagine?

Someone else chime in if i am wrong but i would only think a compression test would work in the event that it skipped time and bent some valves. Otherwise i gotta think pulling the VC covers and doing an inspection would be what needs to happen in order to see if the timing is off the chains are stretched or broken and or the tensioners toast.

Well, not yet....

bought a kit that included new gaskets, upper tensioners and chains (w master links) and replaced my uppers using the cam removal technique. In retrospect wish I would have left the whole thing alone.
The startup rattle remains and now I have oil leaking into the spark plug recesses.

Have you asked joegr or cammerfe about this issue? If not, I would.

No, but I will now that the frustration has subsided a bit. I've been assuming it's the main tensioners leaking down allowing the primary chain to flop around until oil pressure is built up. I called Christopher's about the leak and whether he has a "non secondary almost everything" kit. He said he's got upgraded (thicker) spark plug gaskets and will give me a kit price on what I need now that I have already done the secondary tensioners and chains.

Open up the passenger side - should take less than half and hour - and inspect the cam alignment. If it's OK, then it's the other.
If the timing is bad enough that the engine won't start, then it's pretty likely valves are bent.

A very good chance they are.... But I have gotten it to barely run and you don't hear any valve chatter. Just bad timing..... We will see tomorrow.... Thanks boys
