Kooks Headers - Install Update

Holy christ! That's as much as my custom stainless steel 3" stuff cost. Ah well, I guess that's the price you pay to mod a Lincoln.

Paul.

Well most of that cost is tied up in the headers and the cost to install them. Those alone are more then half the cost.

um um um HOTTIES.....I just hope I'm around when one of you decide to sell, oh and 20 grand laying around!!!!!!!!!

Yummmm!

What are you going to do with the Cobra intake Joey? Powdercoat it?

I didn't have the heart to bid against you guys. :D

Car looks nice. I really like the color. What's the name/paint code of that color? I'm looking for a two-tone deal for my Mustang, and one of them might be a dark metallic gray of some sort...

Maybe Chrome it :)

I have some experience chroming things. :D

If you want the best finish possible out of cast aluminum, here's my advice:

1. Sand the crap out of it. You need to have the smoothest, most uniform finish possible on the surface. This means no casting flash should be left by the time your done - at least not where you're going to see it.
2. Have it polished professionally, again, the smoother your finish prior to chrome, the better the result.
3. Find a really good chrome shop. Although Ford castings are pretty decent (much better, than say, my Trick Flow casting), they have their fair share of pinholes. This things are REALLY noticeable after the chrome goes on. The best way to deal with this is to have them copper coat it several (sometimes lots) of times before the chrome goes on. Chrome doesn't stick to aluminum, so they will need at least one copper coat regardless. If you have a particularly bad pinholes, you can actually weld them with a good TIG and filler rod, then sand the finish down smooth before you send it to polish.

It's all in the prep - the more time you spend on prep, the better the finish will be. :D It sure is easy to clean your motor when all you need is Windex though. Polished is a PIA to keep clean.

Hey Joey, looks like your painting more than half the car, hardly a touch up. Why not paint the whole thing to ensure color and metallic consistency.

There is alot im not paining. Im not doing the doors, front quarters, trunk, roof or rear bumper.

Paint is well matched as best as I can see so far. Ill know for sure in the sunlight. I didnt have him do a complete "strip it to metal and start over" job either. 90% was redoing previous problems. For example... The hood was sprayed at some point, and not done well.

If you don't see any problems under flourescent light, you prolly won't under sunlight. Shop lights are the most unforgiving bastards on the planet, ask me how I know......:(

Yeh, the flourescent lights can show alot more than the sun as far as body straightness. As far as the metallic and color match I think looking at it in different lights will ultimately tell if they did good. I'm not knocking anyone, just curious and I know some colors are extremely hard to match not only color, but the metallic. My MarkVIII has the ever so popular black fading paint, I considered doing sections, but it spread so fast, its a do over. Not necessarily down to bare thou.

Your hands and your eyes are the 2 best tools you have when doing bodywork.......among other things....just ask pep....and all the chick threads he has....:D

Well, its a little more then that. Last I saw it - it had just been cleared, but was still masked and elevated, hadnt been sanded or buffed, etc etc.

Its done, Im going to get it in the morning. I dont expect complete perfection, I didnt pay for that. Someday, I would like to take it to bare metal and completely refurbish it.

It's nice to be able to get a bunch of goodies at once huh! Lol I wish I had that pile of parts you posted a picture of.

Headers are awesome too! One hell of a machine you're building up!
