Looking to purchase first Lincoln

Haha, I hear you.. I drove an 01 Monte Carlo LS before an old lady hit it and it was totaled. I'm mainly looking at highway MPG, honestly.. The Monte was about 30 compared to the LS 22-24.. When driving from Indiana to Michigan once a month, the cost gets up there after a while.. But it's cool.. I don't to much driving other than coming home every so often.

Ive seen 27mpg on the highway and premium barely costs any more.

I have NEVER understood the argument of premium fuel... Is it just me?

Just taking a look at prices here, buying 15 gallons.

The 20 cent difference I have here is the difference of $3.00 per tank.

I always get premium, maybe I am wasting $3, but I feel it is worth it even in my wife's car that doesn't require it.

You loose mpg if you go below what the car needs, dont know how true the opposite is if you go higher than what the car needs

I drove 3 LS's over the last few days.. 2000, 2001, and 2003.. The 2000 kinda worried because of the different transmission or whatever.

The transmissions are the same 2000-2002 and 2003-2006. The shifter has NOTHING to do, other than selecting the gears, with the transmission.

You will need premium gasoline and if you're easy on the loud pedal, you can see 25+ freeway mpg consistently.

Very true.

Is this with any modifications or anything?

My mods are in my sig. This is a heavy Luxurious car. It's not meant to get 30mpg and frankly we don't care because it's worth all the features and comfort.

...
How are part for the LS? I'd guess, seeing it's Ford, the price shouldn't be too high, but, then again, it's a Lincoln.

Actually, it's more a Jaguar than a Lincoln (its sister is the Jaguar S-Type). Most of the parts are not cheap, and since the car was only made from 2000 to 2006, and it shares very little with any other Ford or Lincoln car, some parts are getting hard to find.

Yea, I'm pretty easy on the pedal... On the highway I usually set it to 70-75 and ride on cruise control... so maybe I can get 25+ with a V6.

Uh oh, that's not good news, hahaha.... Well I guess I better start learning to fix cars and make friends with the guys at Autozone.

The V6, in my experience, gets about 1-2 mpg better than the V8. Not worth it, IMHO.

Hmmmmm, good to know!

So thanks to you guys I'll be crossing off the 2000 that's here, seems to be too many issues going on with it and it would be a headache to deal with as a poor college student.

The other one with the extra set of wheels is still an option... What other years would you guys recommend? I have some wiggle room, but not much. I was really tryin to hold on to the 2000 here because he has a bunch in car audio and tints, but hey.. it's not worth the headaches, hahaha

thanks for all your help!

Any LS could be full of headaches, but if you want to minimize that chance find a 2nd gen (03-06).

If you don't have much money to buy an LS you won't be able to afford keeping it running very long if you run into common issues. Might want to hold off till you have more income. Unfortunately these cars have depreciated to the point where they are a great buy for people who want all the luxury and toys. Not so much for those with no money to fix them.

would you have a recommendation for a possible alternative? one that looks and drives like the LS hopefully

I would agree the gen 2 (03-06) is a better car, but if you can't afford it a gen 1 is fine. You'll need to learn to wrench on cars yourself, and develop a good relationship with the parts clerk at the dealership and parts store (read discounts). I enjoy my 01, and can't see spending $12k-$16k for an 06.

Very good point. Especially if you dont know how to fix it and want to just take it to a ford dealership to get it fixed, it can get expensive fast

At this point I'm so lucky to have an extended warranty. The 6 motorcraft coils, labor, bench test to diagnose, plugs, and VCG/seals was $1,900 total from Lincoln. Cost me $220.00 which covered my deductible which is $100 and the bench testing was $60.

Immediately after I get my car back the A/C compressor is now failing to turn on. It's definitely an expensive domestic car to maintain and it has its many flaws. But I personally don't care I love my LS and love some of the LSs on here even more!

I think you can get into a great LS as long as you do your shopping right. Find somebody who already did most of the dirty work with receipts to back it up. Coils are a non stop battle so expect that. But all in all I've owned my second LS now for going on 4mos. Had above repairs done, sway bar bushings, fixed moon roof leak, and now the A/C. Like I said I love it everytime I see it parked far away in the parking lot away from all the inconsiderate shoppers. Its a sexy car and it feels good to feel rich at least while your driving it  BTW, I still search AutoTrader and CraigsList everyday for the right 04-06 LS/LSE. Its hard to get away from the LS addiction. IMO at least..

I agree with what's been said. I think you should hold of if you can and buy an 03+ V8. Maybe it's not an option, I see your willing to spend 5 grand, I think to get the LS experience. Try to save up 10 grand and get that V8. It's soo awesome hearing that beast grumble while your passing people by. I think buying a first gen LS with over 100,000 miles on it is a mistake. Shop around and don't do anything impulsive. Good luck, hope your riding around in an LS sooner than later!

a galant.

your car is gonna bite you in the ass for saying that.

Lost much?

This isnt the thunderbird section.

Really? Take it easy on me, because I'm young and uninformed, but what's so great about the V8?

Are you seriously asking that?

Two extra cylinders and 60 more hp. Plus message center. And it sounds great with exhaust. You dont want a V6 in a car that weighs almost 4000 pounds.

Don't feed the troll. It's the time of the month where the boy from Alberta comes into this section to blow some steam off. Ignore him.

Honestly, the V6 isn't that slow for the weight of the car. I'm going past the speed limit on every road in seconds without much effort. And you can hear that American muscle grumble from the engine, and feels like titties when you can feel it through the pedal.

Just sticking up for the gen2 6s' out there.

I am looking to trade in for an gen2 8 though, but the LS is tough to find around here.

I gotta a buddy of mine who used to work at a used car lot, and they sell extended warranties. Would that suffice or should it strictly be the dealer warranty?

Are coils hard to fix? I had an uncle that lives about an hr away from where I attend college who fixes cars all day long, and he's always said he'd help me out. He specializes in GM and other American made vehicles. I'm a decently smart guy, so maybe with a repair guide, you guys, Youtube and his help, I could fix a few things. LOL
