LS in the Snow

You don't know snow until you're Canadian. I've gotten around just fine with my Michelin Pilot Alpine PA3 tires. With the all seasons though.. forget it.

I can throw a rock and hit canada. We get some nasty winters here in northern MN.

These things will make your winter driving much easier in the LS:

Weight in the trunk, over the axle. I used quikrete (a little over 250 pounds)

Winter tires - I used Winterforce, and am happy.

Limited slip diff - makes getting up and going easier (this is where I found the LS to be the most troublesome in winter driving conditions)
 
Morbid, what year LS do you have?

2005 3.9L V8 LS, Ultimate package

I can't complain as far as the snow... it WOULD be a bit better with an LSD as far as the number of times I've had to rock the thing or have someone push

and myself and pektel have mentioned... these three things should make most of your snow woes vanish

Seriously though, it is a rear wheel drive car. I don't think it is really any better or worse than any other rear wheel drive car. I've driven it in a solid foot of snow without trouble. We regularly get lake effect here than can pile up 2 - 3 feet of snow in a night and I've never been stuck or slid off the road.
I put water softener salt in the trunk every winter. Spend some time in a large open parking lot during the first big snow to get used to the feeling of sliding around and recovering.
 
I live up in Canada and I have no problem with the LS in the winter. Honestly, it's better than my Taurus. It gets stuck a lot less and doesn't spin out as much around corners (provided you don't get on the gas too hard). The AdvanceTrac system is awesome, too. If you get heavy snow, definitely get a set of snow tires regardless of which wheels drive your car.

If RWD were impossible to drive in the winter, what would police officers and taxi drivers do?
 
I'm from NEW ENGLAND and I just got an '03 LS and was wondering the same thing. This guy i work with has an '02 LS and he said as long as you get good snow tires on all four wheels you'll be good to go. Thats what i plan on doin'. He's had his Lincoln LS's since '03 and absolutely loves his car so i trust his word. All we do is talk about our Lincolns now. LMAO. I guess we'll see what happens this winter tho... with 4-5 inches of snow I was going nowhere. I couldn't even move from a stop and got stuck 4 times in 2 blocks.
 
I'm sorry..

Those use to kick the ABS on when it was raining and I was slowing down.. Dedicated winter tires will make sure you get through more snow..
 
or just get an old continental for cheap... my 2001 intech conti was a beast dragon of a car in the snow... I remember early one morning I was going through roads with snow up to my bumper before the plows came on my way to IHOP with a loaded car after a night of drinking after I sobered up... I felt like I was in a sherman tank, it would just go and move whatever was in it's way lol

don't get me wrong, the LS CAN be a decent winter car... but it's got nothing on a continental xD
 
Or just get a 4x4 to use on the really snowy days. That way you'll have something to pull your snowmobile trailer and pontoon boat with. And get to camp during hunting season. Or haul your gf's kid to college with all his crap.

Best part about it: It was about the same price as a set of snow tires. picked it up for $750, but had to weld an exhaust on (the exhaust was missing from the transfer case back.)

what was the shape of the transfer case on that thing? I know on the 4x4's those are like the first things to tire out on trucks that actually use the low setting a lot
 
Transfer case is not the original. We are trying to figure out exactly what transfer case it is, actually. lol. A lot of weird things on that truck. No radio, front bumper on the rear, unorthodox gas tank replacement, Welded metal tray on drivers side front of the engine compartment (which I used as a foot rest while sitting in the engine bay, maybe that's why they did it). I did the standard stuff after I picked it up: fuel filter, plugs/rotor/cap, battery, change oil, mess with valves/timing, misc. U joints, etc. Runs pretty good, but there is a transmission fluid leak somewhere. Which I really don't care about, since I want to put a 5 speed in anyways. Maybe an edelbrock 650 too if I can find one cheap enough to replace the quadrajunk in there now.

What I really like about this truck? It's DIRT CHEAP to get parts for, and everything is so simple to change. And, I'd much rather have this thing be subjected to the road salt, and absorb impacts instead of the LS. I don't care if someone hits my truck because they couldn't stop on an ice patch.

since we are writing about our beaters, thought i'd show you my 90 accord's progress so far. most of it the upgrades have been mechanical but the next mods are goin to be for appearance. couple things here and there and it should be finished. I plan on finishing both the accord and the ls by the end of the summer.

Yeah, that looks like a Yooper truck alright! Were the tires and rims on it when you got it? They're worth as much as the whole truck!
