I was helping one of my friends out today. He was in a car accident last Saturday. I drive him to his job to drop off his Dr. note and on the way out my car starts to overheat. I noticed the A/C running hot and thought to myself, oh crap not the heater control unit again or SOMETHING ELSE! I then look at my temp and its running hot. I pull into a gas station and wait a little while before I drive it again. I drive just down the street and it does it again. I wait 2 fu*king hours for a wrecker to take me to the shop. I'm waiting for the diagnoses as I'm typing this.
There was no anti-freeze smell like the last time it overheated so I have no idea what it what it could be...
 
your fan is f*****. Start it up with the AC on and if you can put your finger into the fan without loosing any fingers that's your culprit. .....maybe just use a wooden stick or something, but if it doesnt seem like its spinning at an incredible rate of speed, that might be your thing....happened to me, and yes you do have to replace the hydraulic pump if its bad, can't just hook up an electric fan.... Nobody's done it.....yet.
 
thermostat?...
They are going to get one of there head tech to look at it tomorrow. I haven't had to replace anything to do with a fan on the car yet so maybe.

Wrong. You can install an electric fan into the LS. LSMonk did it. I forget the steps, and it's not a direct swap, but it can be done.
 
Hydraulic fan pump and thermostat... I hope I get my baby back today!:(
 
Update from yesterday:
They put in a new hydraulic fan pump and thermostat as well as flush the system. On my way to drop off my Mom's car I had one of my friends (who I trust) drive my car. I got to tell you, I haven't really been outside of my car while it's in motion but it's nice! Just seeing those rims spin and the stance! Anyways, we're almost to my Mom' house and he calls me and says: I hate to burst your bubble but it's over heating again... I was like:mad: :( :eek:
We pull into the nearest parking lot and give my car a look and it smells like burning anti-freeze but no leaks?!
So... my day ended with it in the shop. Again:mad:

Update from today:
They think it's the electronic fan now so there in the process of putting that in. Motorcraft is the only brand there is though so... $$$ I'm basically going to have a new cooling system when this is all said and done. He wants to keep it until tomorrow. They are having a little trouble with the electric fan and the PCM for some reason. I told the guy about me having flashed the PCM with a file from SCT and that if he can let me know if he needs to do anything with the PCM to let me know and I'll drive up there reflash it back to stock. He said sure. Anybody else out there gone round and round trying with there cooling system???
 
Sucks man, It's crazy how expensive it is when it starts to overheat. I got a new car eventually. I had a overheat issue for months (it would overheat only in traffic, not on the highway). I just bought a chevy, it would have cost more to fix the cooling problem than the car was worth. I think that the fan might be an issue, also check to make sure you're getting proper glow through your exhaust.

FAIL.last summer i added an electric fan onto my ls it worked good for 2 weeks and then 2 pulleys broke from what dude told me a lack of the hydrulic fan pump pulley being there on top of that it started to over heat again!
took it to the dealership they got it back all original and soled my problem for a small fee of 675$. lol

DONT DO ELECTRIC FANZ!
 
They want me to flash the car back to stock. They want to see how the fan does with the PCM running stock... Hope this is it!:mad:
I'm taking my lunch early so I can go to the shop and flash the PCM and hopefully it can be done by the time I get off at 2:30pm.
 
Got the car back this morning. It's running fine so far but now I'm just a little down about how much money I've put into it for one problem.
 
Car's over heating again.:mad: Going to limp it to the shop this next week. This is beginning to be expensive! I'm hoping it's something they put in and they can just replace it.
I was just starting to feel better about my car too...:(
 
LS Overheating!

LuckyLS, my 2001LS V8 had the same problem of overheating and it was my coolant bottle. IT was cracked and sucking air and eventually the crack got bigger and would completely drain and not stop overheating. I replaced the bottle myself for $112.00 and has not had a problem yet. :)
 
Actually I have already had that problem... I think I even made a thread about it a year and a half ago or so. But, it wouldn't surprise me if that went out again as well...
It's been alright though, I've been getting to my destination without any problems except only twice today has it gotten close to the 3 quarter mark. Also it's hotter then hell out here in Texas right now. Another problem that I have is I think my rear differential is going out.
Funny how so much sh!t can go wrong in such a sort amount of time!

are you sure they are bleeding the system properly?
 
Best price on Hydraulic Fan pump?

Greetings all! New to the forums, but had my 2001 LS for just under 5 years now (of course I love it).

I've been having the overheat issues rarely on & off for the first 4 years (LM dealer did the initial thermostat replacement). A local shop did the 2nd replacement last year. Now - the car is spotting, and it looks like a leak has developed somewhere in the hydraulic pump (or the lines).

I've tried scouring the Internet for decent pictures of the pump (to no avail) and I even have the complete Ford 2000 -2004 electronic service manual, but I can't find a good picture or the Part Number. One dealer quoted my $374, which isn't too bad if you consider not many people sell these (right?)?

Any who - I figured the knowledge bunch here might be able to help with the PN# or a picture?

PS - never had a problem with the window regulators, and only occasional head gasket leaks. Otherwise - we love the car, it replaced my 1995 Cobra, and is about as fast, seems to handle better, and the kids enjoy not resting their heads on their knees anymore.

Sorry - I stand corrected

Yes - valve cover leak, not head gaskets!

I don't want to think about pulling those heads. I figure I'll run this thing into the ground, as it's been good to us for 5 years now, and people still love the way it looks, and I (or my wife) certainly loves the way it drives.

She has become quite the leadfoot in this car....

I'm actually looking for the hydraulic cooling fan pump, which runs on the serpentine belt, located on the passenger side, just above the alternator.

Looking at the picture(s), you've got the fan motor depicted.

It appears that my hydraulic fan pump is leaking from the main shaft in the front. I can find no loose connections, no ripped or otherwise damaged lines.

Crap...I was hoping for an easy DIY repair, versus something only slightly more involved.

Getting back to MY original thread. It hasn't done what it did a week ago (over heating but no loss of power or no effect of A/C). I'm not driving it as much though just to work and back for the most part. I'm planning on taking it to the acctually dealer soon so they can look at the car with there knowlege of the LS.
 
Car started over heating again yesterday after work. I had just taken a friend home and was going to get some stuff done after my shift and as I’m waiting to pull back into the parking lot from traffic the temp needle started going over the half way mark. I had also noticed that the car was radiating heat inside although the A/C was still blowing cold (not like the first time when all I got was hot air coming out of the vents). I pull it to my normal parking spot and called the tow truck guys again. Once I give them a description of my car the lady on the other end was like; Oh it’s you again?! And to make things worse the same guy who towed me the first time towed me again yesterday. Hey, I remember you- he said with a grizzled smile… I was so pissed I couldn’t help but laugh.
The same shop has the car right now and the only reason why I had it towed there was because they said I have 12 months or 12 thousand miles warranted on the parts they used. I’m normally a nice guy when it comes to people who work on my car but I’m so upset that I may just loose my temper with these guys if they try and sell me some more crap that’s just going to fail not even a month later! Oh and to top things off I just got invited to a wedding yesterday by this chick I’m into and I’m all making plans to wash my car and clean it up for Saturday but then this happened! I just hope I don’t have to A. use my Mom’s car or B. have to use a rental… They have 3 days to figure out what it the problem is before they force my hand!:mad:
 
Sounds like there's air getting in to the system somewhere. If there are no leaks, try your degas bottle cap. Does it overheat more while sitting still?
